Is anyone familiar with this coin and why the high price?   There are over 500 graded with about half at the MS66 level.

This coin was always the most expensive nonPM commemorative coin, and this specific price is neither low nor high, just actual price for this grade.
Graded are more safe coins, as there is lot of fakes of this special coin.  As on PM coins collect much (orde or two) more people, so the numbers of graded coins for gold coins cannot be compared with this type of coins. And there are some speculations that some of the mintage, was destroyed or stays at some strong hands or something else. The mintage is not high, but Ninxia for example has lower mintage but the price is lower. Maybe someone else can shed more light on this.

Agree, this is a fair price and about 30% lower than the market peak in 2011. The average grade of circulated coin from a original bank roll is about MS65.
