I had the opportunity to look at the actual gold and silver medals at the ANA show in Chicago.  Wow!  The design is very detailed and attractive.  The underlying symbolizm in the design is impressive.  I dream about owning a 5oz gold medal.  Unfortunately, my dreams are not my reality.  Mark Bonke

Oh I am sure its is beautiful. In the case of the US Mint, a much maturer and more developed commemorative program, says this:

 A design has to be aesthetically pleasing; it should clearly illustrate the event, person or place being commemorated;

Tiny stuffed toy panda (hardly discernible) just to qualify it as a Panda Commemorative medal?  Better to just classify it as a historical commemorative medal. JMO

gold - the barbarous relic!

My impression from watching sales at coin shows is that most people are buying it as an historical commem but many find the Panda to be a cute extra.

Best wishes,

IMO, the Shanghai Memory medals are one of the best issued by Shanghai Mint for a long time. In addition to the attractive details of the medals, the wooden box with glass cover is very unique, especially, the box was made with a special wood which releases cooling fragrant, similar to the Chinese traditional fan used by the female members of the rich family.

I'm sure you guys are right about it being well designed and a fitting tribute to what it commemorates. It is just that I thought the 1988 HK Coin Show Panda was pretty small but the panda on this one is even smaller. It is cute in some respects.

It seems CCF is split on this medal. Its a good thing we weren't in charge of deciding on the awards this medal's creators received!
