Yunnan 1911-1949 50c #257 ms64
« on: August 31, 2013, 04:12:36 PM »
Hello, I normally stick to the modern coins, but couldn't pass this one up. With an ms64 grade on this old Chinese coin it seemed like a good deal.

I would like to know the current price for this coin, is it a common, scarce, or rare date. It's also been graded by PCI, is it worth getting re-graded by ngc/pcgs or sell as is?

Any info is greatly appreciated!

The Yunnan 50 cents is a very common coin. I don't know the PCI grading company, but this coin will most certainly not get an MS64 grade from PCGS or NGC. More like AU details hairlines/environmental damage.

Thank you dragondollar for your opinion, sounds like this PCI company has low grading standards. Most likely I will send it in so it gets cleaned up and regraded.

Newer and less known companies sometimes have lower grading standards to induce people to use their service in order to obtain a higher grade rating than they otherwise would get with NGC or PCGS.

PCI (Photo Certified Institute) has been in grading business for more than 30 years. It was one of the better grading company in grading US coins until mid-2000. It has a new management since later 2012.

I have heard of them, but I guess as they kind of fell off the radar for me as they are not as popular as NGC or PCGS. I was not specifically criticizing them, just mentioning generally that some of the second tier companies were not as strict as they could be in an effort to solicit business.

I was digging through my coins today and came across this one. I'm having a tough time identifying which variety this is. At first glance it looks like a Y-257 4 circle, but taking a closer look there are some differences. I posted a PCGS 4 circle from eBay for comparison.  Any help in Identifying is greatly appreciated.
