3 musketeers' books about tokens
« on: June 27, 2013, 07:37:07 AM »
Dear fellow Shanghai token collectors,

As you know there are 2 books available on a market about Shanghai tokens.

One is a green book from 1991, which includes black and white photographies of several Shanghai tokens.

The other is a red book from 2005 in which we can find colorful photographies of nearly all Shanghai tokens + coupons.

However there is 3 book - the yellow one from 2010. This book is not about Shanghai tokens but about Changzhou tokens.
What is surprising, that after my examination of Changzhou token book I found book a few tokens which are attached to the red book.

After a consultation with famous fellow collector of Shanghai tokens. We detected together that those few tokens in Changzhou token book are not Changzhou tokens only old Shanghai tokens. I marked those tokens in red squares, so you can see it clearly. Changzhou token book is full of errors. There are other example such of as Shenzhen tokens in this book from 1947.
So please be aware of this when you will be reading this yellow book.

As to the red book about Shanghai tokens and coupons. It also contains a lot of errors such of as:

page 52, Good for 12 1/2 cent in trade/Hahns Smoke House 239 So. Main

page 63, Kantin SMS. Emueo/50

page 63, OPA V 1 Y RED POINT and OPA T 1 V BLUE POINT.
Suspicious token: with word: HIMEX (sometimes appears with chinese characters and sometimes without on it)

page 67, 41925 (on both sides), Good for 25c in trade/12439

page 69, Good for one cigar/Corner cigar store palace hotel

page 70, Bakerite 1B a better bread/Good for one 1B loaf white bread

Finally the green book from 1991 has the same problem - includes tokens which are not Shanghai tokens only American ones:

page 113: Good for 5c package of mints/All quality mints (description: page 20), For amusement only/Part and property of machine (description: page 23-23)

page 114: No cash or trade value/Icr amusement 2490 (description: page 25), Good for amusement only/No cash value (description: page 24-25)

page 115: For amusement only/This token has no cash or trade value (description: page 25)

page 120: Good for one cigar/Corner cigar store palace hotel (description: page 34-35)

page 121: Property of Ca-Lee Co.  ....(can't read the first word) for amusement/For amusement only (description: page 40)

page 125: Loaned for amusement only/Property of O.K. Vender (description: page 51-52)

page 134: Good for 12 1/2 cent in trade/Hahns Smoke House 239 So. Main (description: page 93)

Those are all locations of those tokens which are not Shanghai tokens only American tokens.

Please notice that on last picture: P1030756.
Token on the left is a little bit different: has 2 chinese character on both sides (the characters), but token on the right side in the red book has 3 chinese characters. However the design is identical that's wht the token from left side (from Changzhou token book) belongs to old Shanghai tokens group.

picture: P1030712: made by 10 cents 1940 (65) AND made by 20 cents 1940 (66) are both aluminium tokens. They are very rare and belongs to Shanghai tokens.

picture: P1030718: token with a clown and chinese characters which means 2 jiao (20 cents) and other on the other side there are 4 chinese characters (346).

The same picture token (347) the God of wealthiness and 2 chinese characters 2 jiao (20 cents) on the other side 20.

These 2 tokens are not in the green book from 1991 and also not in the red book from 2005 but they belongs to old Shanghai tokens as well.

Finally picture: P1030717: is the same clown but 2 chinese characters on obverse and reverse (345), which are 2 jiao (20 cents). This token is also not in those 2 books which I mentioned above but it is Shanghai token.

Changzhou token book (yellow book) from 2010 includes also other tokens which are not from Shanghai and also not from Changzhou, but from other city. Could it be Shenzhen?

They have a date 1947 and SHING ZHING if I am not wrong. Below there is als some number, like serial number.
