I said the same thing to my buddy. Too good to be true, it's probably a fake. Plus how do they know it was a Chinese fake? The coin was altered.

As usual, NY Post has made few errors in its article.

1909-O 5 dollar Indian head gold coin has a mintage of 32,000. Based on the picture, the coin was not in UNC condition. The current price is about $25,000/coin for AU58, $14,000/coin for AU55 and $9,000/coin for AU50.

It is much more easy to make a high quality fake coin in China than make a high quality altered coin. I do not believe this altered coin is the product of counterfeiter in China. The altered coin in mint state condition is much more easy to detect than in XF or AU condition.
