Hi pandamonium,

that is the wrong Picture, you need the coin from 1997.
Between the legs is a frosted or mirrored gap.

Yikes!    Check out the 1st post,  2nd link to ebay (not NGC).    It is a 1990 not a 97.    That is where i got mixed up......

Upon further inspection, it is ebay's new format.    I did not click the listing in high light on the blue bar.    I complained about this to ebay but no one cares.......dang....

Ebay doesn't make any money when you look at completed listing, that is why they divert you to an active listing that you may buy.

MS69 and omp are around same price right now for almost all 1/20, around $120 or so.

It doesn't matter for that variety, they are all equally available and very few collectors looking for the differences.  Even LD and SD spreads are at all-time lows.  You are ahead of your time in collecting varieties since most gold panda demand goes towards master sets and the master sets are blind to varieties.  Some day many varieties will be collected and differences will begin to emerge.

https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/6673/Modern-Chinese-Varieties-1997-Gold-5-Yuan/

The Frosted Gap Variety is rare. Only see one example each year. The last one was here:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1997-SCARCE-CHINA-PANDA-GOLD-COIN-5-YUAN/273388097467?hash=item3fa7334fbb%3Ag%3Ak4AAAOSwliJbZQvW&LH_PrefLoc=1&_sop=10&_nkw=panda+gold+1997&_sacat=40712&_from=R40&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc&LH_TitleDesc=0

A comment upon the rarity of Panda varieties. Varieties are the product of dies with some unique feature, in this case a "frosted gap." Unless a die breaks prematurely it will strike several hundred, or thousand, coins before it wears out. Therefore, there is a good chance that several hundred or more examples of this variety exist. So far, not too many people are looking for them (although this particular variety can be found on page 231 of the Gold & Silver Panda Coin Buyer's Guide 3 – apologies for the self-promotion). That may actually be a good thing in the long run as more collectors have a chance to add these to their collections. Arif is correct that right now varieties are deemphasized in China. Someday that is bound to change as they really are fascinating.

Best wishes,
