New Auction Buy in Geneve: 1921 Shih Kai PCGS MS62
« on: November 29, 2012, 07:38:08 AM »
Just won this 1921 Shih Kai Dollar with even old time toning. As usual, looking for any interesting observations about the coins technical details or mint of origin, etc. Thanks and enjoy, marbury518

Looks like this coin could be rare. Informed that it is the long leaf struck from a modified 1919 YSK die, or number 2 from Kondi's famous post on the 1921 YSK.
Whether this affects value much I have no idea.

It is hard to tell toning without color on your pics. It looks like a very nice coin. I prefer these coins not dipped. It is more beautiful the way it is rather then dipped in my opinion. I hope these coin don't begin to show up with artificial toning much like the morgans. Congrats on this beautiful coin.

Dear marbury518 :001_rolleyes:,

I think this is common type. Your fatman dollar 1921 is not the exactly nr 2 from my post about the 1921 YSK. It has nice toning but that's all. Let's analize your 1921 YSK dollar closer. First off all, all chinese characters on obverse of the one which I posted are bold, while all chinese characters on obverse of your 1921 are not bold. What is more what I noticed...The part of first chinese character which means "made" on your 1921 is in wavy shape but on the piece which I posted it is in more straight shape. The chinese character "ten" on obverse of both coins looks similar but not exactly the same. Finally on obverse the part with 4 stars doesn't look the same. However the key point is that on reverse the long leaf (on your 1921 fatman) is filled and does not look really outstanding. But on the piece which I posted the long leaf is not filled (please pay a close attention on this point). Anyway it has nice toning:) Good catch!

Dear moderator,

I have a problem to post photo which would explain my analize to marbury518's coin.

This is what shows up whenever I want to post poto:

Dear marbury518,

Your 1914 traingle one is nr 27 from my post:
http://china-mint.info/forum/index.php?topic=4460.0
If it would be nr 12 it would be worth a little bit more.

Thanks...yes I see the difference on the filled v unfilled leaf esp. Found this 1914 traingle up for auction....any good Kondi?
