Old Shanghai telephone tokens from 1930's
« on: October 22, 2012, 03:14:24 AM »
Dear coin collectors and coin dealers,

Speaking about old Shanghai telephone token. I would like to show you 2 old Shanghai telephone tokens.

One is very common telephone token from 1930's. It is probably American company in Shanghai. This is brass token. The diameter is 19mm. I have this token in my collection. The obverse says "Good for one call" and in a circle there is chinese translation. The reverse says "Shanghai Telephone Company" and in the circle there is image of telephone.
In Shanghai on some streets there are still some tracks, which left after this company on a road (see photos). I also found some document about this company on the Internet.

The second token is very rare! I believe it is also from 1930's but I am not 100% sure, because I don't really collect telephone tokens. It is made of brass and has 22mm in diameter. There are 2 varieties of this telephone token. One is with triangle cut out and the other is without triangle cut out. Both are extremely rare telephone tokens.

I don't have more information about those 2 telephone tokens so I will finish here. If someone from this forum knows more you can post photos and your thoughts here.

Best wishes,

KONDi

Here is a photo of old Shanghai telephone token which is the same as the first picture on the beginning of this post.
As you can see, if you compare it to the first one photo you will see that this is the same token. The difference is that this one here is in XF condition and in a triangle chinese character "8" has a purple ink. This piece below is worth a lot N30

This telephone token was issued 60 years ago in early 1950s, probably in the year 1953.

Telephone tokens from China are one of the biggest mystery for, and not only because it is hard to find them or because they are rare.
It is because there is really not record how many of them were issued from different period of time after 1949. There is some catalog about which I heard but it really doesn't show or tell anything about modern Chinese telephone tokens.

Most of you guys would think. It is only a token. It is worth only between 1-3 USD per one piece. Nothing more erroneous.
Try to collect modern chinese telephone token and you will see how hard to find them.

I would like to show you another rare modern chinese telephone token from Guangzhou.

You can also take a look on very rare variety of ST old Shanghai telephone token. There are 2 varieties of this ST old Shanghai telephone token: one is silver-plated brass the other is brass variety. The brass variety is much more rare.

As I heard from many collectors of old Shanghai tokens. ST is a shortcut from SHANGHAI TELEPHONE COMPANY which previously issued (previously---in 1930s) old design telephone token, which is very common: GOOD FOR ONE CALL, on the other side there is SHANGHAI TELEPHONE COMPANY. I found some interesting information on japanese website about it:

I hope you enjoy my reading as always.

Here are some Chinese deposit telephone tokens and also 1 deposit card...

Long-distance telephone deposit token:
Despite it's rusted condition, this token is a rare one. For the characters are traditional Chinese characters instead of simplified ones.

Dear all,

Let me present some Chinese deposit telephone tokens.
Those deposite tokens, though not to be thrown into telephone box to make phone calls, are used for managing telephone fees long before IC card phone prevailed. It's usuallly issued by post offices.

The one which has elipse shape (or watermelon shape) are from Beijing post. Each of them has a name Taiping Qiao post office  and a value 50 yuan, 100 yuan and 200yuan.

The numer below such of as: "4-1", "2-1" or "1-1" stands for the number of phone booth.

There are another type of Chinese deposit telephone tokens: in the round shape. These had the same task to do as previous one the only difference is that those 3 red ones have different value: 10 yuan, 50 yuan and 100 yuan. These were used to make domestic or international long distance calls deposit.

Those 3 are from post office in Yong An. It is a city in Fujian province.

壹拾元 - 10 yuan
伍拾元 - 50 yuan
壹佰元 - 100 yuan

The number "02" or "2" is the number of phone booth as I suspect.
