Thank you!

I hope they look a lot nicer in person.  These designs do not look as nice as some of the older issues.
I will still be buying a few of them, but it looks like none of these are even close to the beauty of the
 2000 Scallop.

Agree with you, htey could do better, especially a colored one, I was looking forward to see the design. But probably in real it will look better, indeed.

Well that's disappointing.

Look at the good side:

Holders of past dragon designs don't have to worry that other collectors are going to liquidate theirs in order to buy up the 2012 ones.
Prices of earlier dragons are bound to increase!

True, but I am concerned that the overall demand for dragons will be less than it could be if the new design were as good as the 88s and 00s

Actually since the OX of 2009 came out, the color version is truly ugly..... I prefer pre 2009 Lunars, they are much more beautiful. THis color dragon looks more like a Snake.

I also think that CHNGC is trying to make it "modern looking" while its the classic looking that suits Lunars much much more....

Maybe The Dragon should go back in....

(maybe someone was "Puffing the Magic Dragon")

Why do they do that?   Someone got paid to "modernize" the beautiful classic Brittania, too....

I would think that a less than stunning designed 2012 dragon will make the classics dragons even more valuable.

A whole new level. Medals, bullion art "sticks", etc.

http://www.chngc.net/Main/zhuanti/2011/longjnz/cp2.html

The bullion Medal actually have a much more sexy design than the coin (12 KG Silver Coin). IMO.

Panda America
Xu Hong
Apmex

From what I hear they should be out by the end of the month.
Don't expect the prices to be very good though.

The older issues are the better buy as an investor.

As a collector I will be buying them though.

If anyone of you is interested in this, I can see how much I will pay for them directly to the distributor in HK. It should be cheaper for me here...... Or I can post the prices if I do get to buy them at the "member" price.

I thought it's quite a let-down to have all the same dragon design for different shapes, in particular the flower shaped. The obverse used to be the animal instead of the national symbol so now it seems the series design is broken.

Well they're at least listed on pandaamerica's website, not for sale yet. Rang them and the girl on the phone said maybe the end of this month, no price yet or preordering as they don't know how much they'll be.

Anyone use any other distributors that would ship to Australia?

I played the contrarian and mostly bought 1990 dragon & phoenix coins for peanuts. They're still cheap at $235 for a 69 in the little silver version. The 2012 dragons could easily quadruple in price, and I'm betting the next sector rotation once the lunar dragon craze settles will be into the dragon & phoenix coins.

Since the 2012 lunars are probably going to be sold out before 2012 even arrives, people might turn to the dragon & phoenix earlier than they would otherwise, simply because there are no other dragons available.

I think the silver fan and scallop are cheap.
All the gold is so expensive
So is the silver round, with that high mintage!

With that said I bought
1 silver fan
1 silver scallop
1 gold & silver round set (my wonderful girlfriend is going to pay half for this set)

I plan on buying at least 2 more scallops

Also the pictures of the actual coins look much nicer than the
pictures on the china mint website.

I have dragon fever!  I have bought over 30 dragon coins in the last month.

The silver scallop is the best deal in my mind also.
If a person was only going to buy one 2012 dragon,
this would be the one.

Being a dragon collector I feel the need to buy the round ones too,
even though they seem overpriced

I also bought the Chinese silver scallop. I like the design. I also plan to buy the round 1 oz. dragon from Canada (simple but nice design) and a BU lunar dragon from Australia (I like the reverse proof effect of the BU coin) to add to my collection. It's also interesting to be able to compare side-by-side the different year of the dragon coins released by different countries.

I’m kind of starting to be a dragon fan … So I bought a few of the Chinese, Australian and Canadian coins … I purchased a few of each to start a dragon collection. I do like the Chinese Dragons much more than any of the others though.

I guess I'm not really too crazy about any of the designs but I'm sure I will get accustomed to them and they are needed for the collection so I'm happy.

The Canadian dragons are not a bad deal at $98 and the mintage on these I purchased is only 48,888 so a fair deal I would say.

The silver fan is very interesting:

-First of the series
-Not much more mintage than the previous one, 80k vs 66k
-The little Dragon design fits pretty well in the very Chinese fan shape, beautiful! (Xu Hong pic)
-$268 - affordable (including original mint package and shipping fee)

Also attractive for savvy newcomers, forward looking.

The plum blossom shape, a must for Chinese Dragon lovers.

Isn't anybody else sick of looking at Queen Elizabeth on the back of every other coin.  I much prefer the different temples on the back of the lunars. Or even the Temple of Heaven on the back of the Pandas.  Hong Kong, Isle of Mann, Canada, and several others all have the same reverse on all of their coins for the last 40 years.

I would like to apologize to all the Canadian Members on the form for bashing the silhouette of the beloved Queen.

I'm not saying that I'm a big fan of the queen's image on the back of the coin, but for me, I don't need both sides of the coin to look attractive. As long as I'm attracted to one side, that's good enough. An attractive reverse on a coin is only a bonus for me. :)

Oh and I forgot to mention that this is a proof coin for $98 and mintage of 48,888

Maybe still not what the Chinese dragons are but a decent consideration.

I was reading through a bunch of old posts and came across this coin that Badon was selling.  Notice the grade numbers he quotes in the listing.  The listing was posted on August 17.  Wow only 8 MS69s  currently there is 75 MS69s and 3 MS70.  What happened in the last 90 days that would increase the POP. by almost 1000%

For sale: 2000 2/3 oz silver scallop plum blossom flower dragon with box & COA graded and authenticated NGC PF69 ULTRA CAMEO. This is one of my favorite coins. Beautiful, culturally significant, low mintage, and high demand, while also rare in high grades. This coin continues to go up in value steadily. There are only 8 coins known in a high PF69 grade, and there are none finer. That makes this coin very hard to buy, but very easy to sell - a coin everyone wants, but few people have. The best part is that it's still affordable, for now. Its price may not stay within reach of ordinary people forever though, if it continues to climb as it has in the past.

There was an American (Chinese) seller that sold off around 50 to 100 of them in original 10 coin sheets. That was the largest hoard I know of. There were several other much smaller hoards of just 1 or 2 sheets. I don't remember seeing them all get sold individually though, so I think it's possible a substantial fraction of them are still sitting around in somebody's collection. Makes sense, since 2012 will be a much better time to sell. Over time, I'm sure those hoards will be thoroughly dispersed.

2000 dated coins are starting to seem old now, whereas before, they were nothing. I remember buying several silver ones for around $150 and feeling like I was "overpaying", like I usually do, haha :)
