HI,
I sold a 2009 1 oz silver panda.  The buyer is claiming it is counterfeit.  He can tell because it is too thick.  He says the counterfeiters added thickness so it sould weigh the correct amount. Anybody else hear of this?
Thanks

I've tried to post photos, but they're not showing up.  Is there a time delay from posting until you can see the post?
thanks

Nah, don't feel too bad. It took me a few tries to "perfect" my CCF skills. Try clicking on "additional options", then browse the photo files you want to attach ...

It looks genuine to my eyes, comparing it to the photos of fake and real 2009 s on Pandacollectors website.

Unless they are coming up with much better fakes...

Agreed ... on first glance, there's nothing obvious other than the panda's nose (I thought they are supposed to be 'shiny'? - not frosted) and the pattern on center of stairways seems to be slightly off, which could be due to the fact the photos are too close-up and a bit fuzzy. Then again, I am not the expert here, Peter and some other members on CCF are.

It sure looks real to me.  I also checked Pandacollector site, as well as searched the web.  The eyes look right (some say that's the hardest for the counerfeiters to do right, as well as the reeding on the side being diagonal (most counterfeits having straight reeding).  I'll let you know what happens when I get the coin back.

Measure thickness if you can. Maybe ask buyer what numbers they got, and by what means.  Are they a high volume informed buyer, or a newbie?

Fake 1 oz. silver Pandas are often thicker than normal. Because the base metal within the "coin" is less dense than silver more material is required to add up to 1 oz. This results in an abnormally thick coin. Additionally the posted photos show the greater graininess that is typical of counterfeits. Below is a photo of a genuine 2009 silver Panda. Note how creamy smooth the grain texture is. Grainy coins frequently turn out to be fake coins. You might also check to see if the coin in question is diagonally reeded. If it isn't that is a sure sign on a 2002 or later silver Panda that it is no good.

Best wishes,
Peter Anthony

Ust to follow up:

The reeding IS diagonal.  The coin is a tiny bit thicker than it should be.  You can only tell if you have another Panda coin to compare to.

Even the best fake Pandas that I have come across have softer details and significantly rougher grain patterns than genuine coins. There are some very nasty fakes on the market but none that I've seen can pass that test. At the Long Beach show I went around with both real and fake 2000 silver mirrors. The bogus Panda is excellent quality but I doubt that anyone who had a chance to compare the two side-by-side will be fooled again.

Best wishes,
Peter Anthony

Have you any reason to believe that any fakes have "snuck past" the grading services?, perhaps years ago?
