Thanks for providing a focal point for everyone. It was nice to discover a thing or two about forum members and Pandas at your booth. I didn't buy or sell anything at the show but did submit to NCS directly which is always a bonus when it can be done.

I would love to hear some commentary about the sales activity of the chinese coins at that show. I really wanted to make but could not. Any comments/reporting from Peter Anthony, badon, PeterPanda of Panda America will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you for writing about it. I guess I can deduce that sales were real healthy :) Any specifics will be greatly appreciated.

The floor at Long Beach was active with lots of people gathered around tables that offered Chinese coins like Victory Bullion, PandaAmerica and Mish International. The Expo offered dealers a new lower cost option for tables in the back of the hall and apparently a fair number chose those. It had no effect on the Chinese coin dealers but there were a couple of more empty tables in the US section than I remember from past shows.

For me, the best thing about coin shows is the opportunity to meet people, exchange ideas and compare coins. In doing that Panda Halves, Pandora and I found a new minor variety of 2002 200 Yuan gold Panda. Later on Panda Halves noticed something more significant, but that will have to wait. Anyway, for me Long Beach was great. It isn't every day that a writer can get free advice and story ideas from some of the truly outstanding collectors and dealers in the industry.

I know that many Forum members are interested in the 1980 Olympics coins, particularly the brass set. The most difficult coin to find in it is the archer. Here is a photo of an original sheet of archers for those who have never seen one before (like me). It was brought to Long Beach but wasn't on public display. The wording on the end of the box indicates the coins were struck at the Shanghai Mint. I hope to see you all at the next show – you never know what you will see and find. Happy collecting!

Best wishes,
Peter Anthony

My impression of the market right now is that buying is strong, but selling is weak. We're entering the peak of the slowdown, and supply has tapered off noticeably with more sellers taking vacations. Not many Chinese coins were available for sale at the show, but plenty of people were looking for them - and not finding them!

All indications are pointing towards another exciting market when the slowdown tapers off towards August. Lots of people are buying up coins, but not selling them. NCS has a 3 month backlog of coins, which should tell you something. Chinese coins are probably a big fraction of the coins clogging their processing pipeline.

Also, new NCS/NGC authorized dealer applications have surged to the highest levels ever. There's a 1 month waiting list in processing new applications.

Most of these things are happening behind the scenes, and will begin to show themselves around August/September. The predicted timing of the end of the slowdown is almost exactly matching the size of the NCS backlog! Dealers are getting ready for the next bonanza.

On top of all that, rumors are saying that the next round of inflationary money policies will occur at about the same time too...

Don't bother to hold on to your hats, it's going to be a shredded mess anyway once this market spins up into a tornado late in the year :)

Here's the perfect example of how strong sales are, and how sellers are curtailing supply:

http://china-mint.info/forum/index.php?topic=3001.msg13320#msg13320

That's right here on our own forum, but seems to be typical of the entire market. People are waiting for the August auctions to set new higher prices before they sell too much.

damn I would loved to attend something like this... Florida is only six hours away and there I could submit my collection for grading directly.. would have to check customs regulations for bringing in coins though...
