Ancient coin set
« on: May 22, 2011, 12:58:10 AM »
I bought these coins in a set with others.  Trying to figure out what they are worth.  They have a COA saying they're real.  Help. Anybody.

I have no idea about the authenticity of these, but I'll throw out a guess of a few hundred dollars for the set, if they're genuine. I think genuine "coins" of these kinds are common enough to keep prices down.

Retail on this set is about $100. The coins appear to real, just common. For wholesale value  $50-60 would be  fair. Hard to sell because even though they are real, most assume they are fakes. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome. This was my first ever on line post, and not too sure how to do it. I've been reading the forum for a couple of months and really enjoy it. I've been involved with China coins for maybe 20 years, so it's great to see the enthusiasm! I'm in China now, but I'll be back for the Long Beach show. I hope to meet some of the "brothers" there.

The set contains the following items going clockwise from "noon" #1) "hua pu" also known as "spade money", Han Dynasty interregnum (ruler Wang Mang)circa 9-22 A.D. #2) "ban liang" (equal half ounze) Western Han Dynasty circa 100 B.C.  #3)Ming tao" ("knife money) Warring States period, circa 300 B.C.  #4)"ant-nose money" kingdom of Chu, Warring States period, circa 300 B.C. Although not valued at huge money, it's a decent set and worth keeping for the historical values.By the way, there is a modern China coin, small silver 3 yuan, issued in the 1990's,depicting some of these early monet types.

There's actually two of them, one is part of the invention & discovery series, and the other is part of the yellow river culture series. That's all as far as I know.
