2009 Oxen

Does anyone know the mintage number for the 2009 "flower" shaped Oxen 10Y silver coin? The new 2011 guide states 6,000. Is that a typo as most others are 60,000 in the series? Thank you for any help as to the value as well. cheers...

The mintage is indeed 60k.  The flower shape coin REALLY took off - I've seen it selling for over $700 USD at shows!

Thank you PandaWill. I've been helping another lunar collector that have several different years and there isn't much info out there. Pricepedia is a good resource, but was lacking on this particular coin. Flower coins aren't very common as compared to other coins on ebay.

Now why is this Ox coin so much more expensive that the others of this series is my next question, as they all have a mintage of 60,000? cheers

Some how it is established that 2009 Ox flower coins is the key to the lunar flower series (2005-2016)

Why? The 2009 flower ox is listed in Pricepedia with the mintage and a recent dealer price. No auctions of it lately, though, not even in China. Just curious what you are looking for and thanks for any input. Oh yes, last fall the Pricepedia showed it selling in China for $550-$600 when it could still be bought in the U.S. for $375. It was a good clue to where the price was headed.

Hi Peter, yes we saw the $600.00 figure in Pricepedia, so went looking for completed auction prices. Myself and the owner couldn't believe our eyes and just wanted to confirm the price from past sales. Wasn't knocking the Pricepedia. We are both new to flower coins so was a learning curve for me and the owner. Couldn't believe the jump in price over the other flower coins and just wanted to verify and to find out why the difference. Any reason that you know of to make this a Key Date coin...were there less minted than what was stated or folks just hanging onto them? It was the other 2011 Chinese coin book that had the mintages wrong (misprinted) not the Pricepedia...thought I better clear that up. cheers

I will have to research the reason the flower ox became the key, but the way prices for it took off 6 months ago made it clear to me that something was happening. This particular coin was a spur to my decision to make a lot of extra work for myself and split Panda Pricepedia's dealer prices into two categories: China and the rest of the world. There is so much to be learned from what happens in China, it's like having a crystal ball. Shortages of coins and rising prices there very frequently translate into higher prices everywhere else in short order. There's a fascinating dynamic that is at work right now.
