World Coin News to start Panda Column
« on: April 02, 2011, 04:23:12 PM »
Chinese coins are going to gain a little more prominence in World Coin News from Krause Publications. Beginning in the May issue there will be a regular monthly column on collecting and valuing Pandas. Eventually the column may be expanded to cover other modern Chinese coins, as well. I am happy to report that yours truly will be the author of the new column. I am still seeking a name for it.

Best wishes,
Peter Anthony

Wow, this is a major development! Congratulations, both to you, and to me - My collection is about to increase in value, I can feel it in me bones.

How will your current publications be affected? Will there be any conflicts of interest to deal with?

Thanks for the encouragement. I don't expect any conflicts of interest at all. The column will be targeted to collectors who haven't started, or maybe just started, to explore the field. It isn't expected to have the same level of analysis that the Pricepedia does but rather to give a sense of the possibilities that Chinese coins offer. Not to mention that it won't include the catalog of hundreds of prices that the Pricepedia does each month. Its aim will be to make Chinese coins more understandable to numismatists who don't know where to begin in the field. This actually reminds me more of the material I presented in the college undergrad Anthropology lecture I gave earlier this year than it does the Pricepedia. There's so much to be told about Pandas and other Chinese coins that I think there won't be much overlap and I will try my best to make the articles interesting for everyone.

Best wishes,
Peter Anthony

This represents the maturing of the current phase of this market, and the beginning of a new phase. The funny thing is, I was just writing about that in my current article draft. I was hoping to have it finished by the end of the day, but it looks like it's dark already. Funny how that happens. Oh well, being a day late means I can mention this news in my article.

That's excellent news Peter, they couldn't have chosen a better champion for the Chinese coin market.

I get tons of private messages over at Kitco from nervous beginners, the most asked question is, "how do I avoid counterfeits?", and secondly, the specifications of Pandas, thickness, weight and diameter. The basics.

The more exposure the better.  ...congrats.  ...cheers

congrats Peter. This is definitely good news for this market. You should pick a name that will allow you to expand from Pandas to the modern chinese coins market. You can always pick 3 names and we can vote on them :)

I would like to avoid using either Pandacollector or Panda Pricepedia in the name to avoid confusion.

How about something simple, like "modern Chinese coins"

It was requested that I try and come up with something "snappy." I'm trying to do that without boxing myself into only Pandas. No solution, yet.

Maybe you could post a scan of the page where it'll go, to spark some ideas based on the other content of the publication?

Congratulation, Peter, it is about time for someone with great knowledge in modern Chinese coins to write column for modern Chinese coins at World Coin News.

I guess it would help if you told us what you'd like to say to the uninitiated readers. Then, it might be easier to come up with a name to entice them to read it.

I finally decided to call the column The Panda Collector. Thanks very much for all the suggestions - they are excellent ideas, except maybe Ode to the CCF .

"Ode to badon" was going to be my second choice, but I thought that might be a bit much :)
