Ebay Shill Bidding 1997 Gold Ox
« on: February 14, 2011, 12:57:34 PM »
This auction just ended for a 1997, Year of the Ox, 1/2 oz. gold "plum".  The bidding looks very suspect to me.  I bought one of these graded PCGS PR69DCAM about two months ago for $ 3,200.00, and I believe I was the only bidder.  I would like some expert opinions.  Ebay item #220736189529.

The bidder l***o might have made shill bids, but did not affect the final value. The last three bidders made bids within 10 seconds before the ending and pushed the price up $2,800 to the final value of $5,900.

This auction was for the full 1 oz round from 1997, not the same as your 1/2 oz flower. Both are 100 Yuan, but the 1 oz fomers value is listed near the sale price, and your 1/2 oz flower is still listed at near your purchase price.

The picture is a scalloped coin.  It is not round.

Weird- yes, not only are pics of plum 1/2 oz, but also its clearly stated as 1/2 oz in the description too.     My bad- Clearly I need to get new reading glasses-

When I saw the price that's what I thought, that it was the 1 oz. round.  I think it's a very overpriced bid.  That's why I'm suspicious.  You can buy the Rabbitt right now from Coinex for $ 4,300.00 on Ebay.

The coin appears to be a gem in the photos and is still in its original packaging, potentially an important factor. Bidder l***o with 0 feedback might have been a shill but the two high bidders were way over the l***o bid and have substantial histories of their own on eBay. It looks like a case of two bidders who both wanted the same, very attractive item.

Best wishes,

If anybody would like my very attractive item they can have it for $ 5,000.00.  I'm all for original mint packaging but I would still take a PR69DCAM over an original mint package.  My rule of thumb is a 68 is what I expect from original packaging, a 69 is a win a 67 is a loss.

PCGS PR69s do not grow on trees (I know from experience). Over the years I've submitted some very nice coins in original packaging that came back graded 66 by them, after which I've had to sit around with a loupe and try to figure out what the grader didn't like. If anyone is in the market for this coin I doubt you will ever see a nicer example than what KonaJim is offering. (That's my totally unsolicited opinion)

Best wishes,

The exact coin a 1997 Ox in original mint packaging is ending soon, right now at $ 3,500.00.  Will be interesting to see where it ends?  In theory this is a chance for the underbidder of the previous lot.  I doubt anyone could discern the difference in grade from Ebay photos.

Update, the underbidder is also bidding $3500 for the 1989 1/2 ounce snake and $3500 for the 1988 1 ounce dragon (new high for this coin I believe)!!  Deep pockets.
