1997 1/2 oz Ag Panda
« on: January 08, 2011, 09:06:55 PM »
Seems to be my day of questions

I just reviewed the website of Rare Coin Collector. He lists 2 types of the 1997 1&2 oz Ag Panda, one of which he claims to be issued in Macao

http://www.rarecoincollector.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=36&products_id=3553

The "Macao" issue was graded "proof" by NGC and both types seem to vary in various fields (eyes, left ear, fur on the back). I attach a combined picture for your convenience.

I have searched through e*b*a*y to find some NGC MS coins, which again look different - to me rather than the "Maccao" issue than the "regular" one

while other "MS" look like the "regular" listed in the shop

I am by no means an expert but I find it difficult to belive that such a difference as the left ear may be based on light effects :confused1:

Any clues - Thanks

Those appear to be different coin varieties. The bottom "Macao" coin is rotated, with much different lighting, so it confuses things. None of the photos are quite good enough to be sure though. It does look like the bunch of grass in the water on the far left is "thicker" on the Macao coin at the bottom than the one at the top. I see several other differences too, but they could all be caused by the lighting.

I don't think you can tell anything determinative from those photos.  I will say that the NGC Designation of PF UC on a BU strike coin is meaningless.  They make those mistakes on occasion.

NGC made error in grading 1/2 silver pandas initially. There are also other dates with PF designation for 1/2  oz BU pandas.

This recent link does list a Macao proof variant of the 1997 silver 5Y:

I've actually got both the NGC MS69 and PF69 versions of this coin in my SDB. Next time I visit it, I'll try to snap some photos to further clarify this issue.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but in 1997 China did apparently mint a rare 5oz gold medal(?) in anticipation of Macao's return to China in 1999. Incidentally, Rarecoincollector has recently upped the price on this coin to $750... I would e-mail them with questions, but wait--they never reply to e-mails. I don't know; maybe we've got an misunderstood sleeper-variant here?
