1997 Silver Unicorn Variety
« on: May 18, 2018, 07:40:45 PM »
Back in 2016, NGC started recognizing a version of the 1997 MS silver unicorn called "without curl".

https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/5339/Modern-Chinese-Varieties-1997-Silver-10Y-Unicorn/

When the article came out I started looking around.  What I found is that the "without curl" can be found in limited quantities.  Most of the coins I have seen and purchased are sourced from Asia (Singapore and Hong Kong mostly).  I also wondered if this version was available in "proof" as well. I looked for about 1 1/2 years and finally found one at a Heritage Auction....and you guessed it, Hong Kong.  I found a second one at another auction, Stack's, and yes you guessed it, Hong Kong as well.  This does not mean the source was Hong Kong, since both auction companies source coins globally.  But it was consistent with what I saw in the MS version.

When I submitted the proof version to NGC for grading, I asked for a "mule" designation (why not, they only stated the without curl version was an MS coin and said nothing about proof), to which they so politely declined to my utter amazement.  Either way, at the current moment, I have the only one graded in the NGC census as proof.  Needless to say the "proof version is very hard to find.

Just check eBay listing of 1997 1 oz. silver unicorn. For BU, 22 are curl and 3 without curl. For proof, 5 are curl and zero without curl.

Here are NGC graded PF69UC without curl, 3567286-032 and 3567286-038. Both coins were in a old holder.
