1980 China Olympics coins
« on: January 18, 2018, 11:13:25 AM »
Seems like these coins are hot and activily traded on eBay. Especially the pieforts are selling at high prices. Any opinion on buy, hold or sell?

I do not know the market for the 1980's but they have been long overlooked.      How do you ignore 2nd year MCC market?    Olympics are not that popular.       The silver Piedforts are expensive w/ about 500 plan mint.      The 3 silver, wrestler, soccer & other are now getting higher prices w/ 40,000 plan mint.     The overlooked one is the silver speedskater w/ 5,000 planned mint.   Ebay has a silver PF 69 Speedskater listed maybe once a year so it is a good target and ignored.
The other 1980 brass, etc are getting more demand too.....

Perhaps the forthcoming Winter Olympics has something to do with it?

Maybe, but the market finally decided to buy early years and 1980 was a ignored year due to Olympics design.     At some point the 2nd year means more then design.      Speedskater w/ 5,000 or 2nd lowest mintage for silver is the better price, high grade is best.    The brass are getting good prices too...

Mr Ge's book 1981 & 82 have slim pickings too....

eBay 152863837312, the one you mentioned above, auction ended at $1,227. Looks like the seller is not aware of it being a piefort? Did you bid? PCGS price guide shows $9,500 for a 69 grade. If I were the seller I would send it in for grading first.

I won it. Doubt it gets 69. $9500 is nonsense.

It's only Cameo, people are snobby about that. Price seems fair but I wouldn't buy it. I sold a complete 69UC set for $20k+ a few years back.

And how much such a set is worth now? Hope price is higher. I have a 1Y copper 69 set, 2 are uc, 2 are only cameo. Hard to find a complete uc69 set.

1980 Silver.  Not many this 2nd year so probably important to own...

Skater, downhill racer, biathlon   30Y      500 plan mint    expensive
Two archers                               15Y      500 plan mint         "
Wrestlers                                   20Y      500 plan mint         "
Soccer, equestrian                      30Y      500 plan mint         "

Speed skater                              30Y      5,000 plan mint   affordable

Wrestler                                     20Y      40,000 plan mint      "
Soccer, Equestrian                      30Y      40,000 plan mint      "

The 500 plan mint are expensive.   The 40,000 plan mint out priced the 5,000 mint Speedskater probably due to design popularity...

The Speedskater 30Y  5,000 plan mint is the 2nd lowest plan mint and best price but prices on all are going up...
PF UC    NGC 288 total      PF 69 UC - 74,  PF 68 UC - 110
PF C      NGC 671   "         PF 69 C - 109,  PF 68 C - 254
PF         NGC 77     "         PF 69  69 - 2,   PF 68 - 4

The best to buy is the PF 69 UC w/ 74 total pop.   Very rare to see on ebay, maybe one every few years.   New collectors, you may not favor the design but it is early year and fairly low pop.  Find the PF 69 UC....

Photo on file of PF 69 UC.   Maybe best buy for price if you can find one.   74 top pop will not be enough for the market in the future.....

I really need to spend more time on here these days. I knew I had some of these in the safe, they were a pawn shop score about ten years ago.
