If there is indeed a difference, why is it so? By accident or design? Worn dies or different dies? Or no difference in the first place?

The "new working die" always produces coins with a lesser frosty surface and an excellent design detail. The working die after the second frosty treatment usually produces coins with a better frosty surface and an excellent design detail. The working die usually will be retired after 3-4 frosty treatments. The coins produced after working die being treated 3-4 times usually have a good frosty surface, but a relatively poor design detail.

There is nothing special about the first day issue coins, except the label of the holder, since new working dies are prepared every day during the coin production period.
