2018 Panda Coin Design Change?
« on: August 22, 2017, 01:44:03 AM »
Will the 2018 Panda coins introduce a new design format? The current format started in 2009. I think it would be a good development. We should know in just a couple of months, or so.

I heard 2018 is the last year of the design concept, and that completes the 10 year period of the design.

What does design concept mean? And why is that significant? Is there something similar in the design from 2008 to the present? Thank you.

We will have to wait and see...

In any case, I think it would be a positive if the layout does change.

Yes, the Panda is posed in front of a horizontal bamboo forest screen. The basic layout is constant.

I've never seen what the anti-counterfeiting details are?  I have quite a few 2016 and 2017 bullion silver coins.  They look normal to me. :-)

The marked frosty surfaces have multiple layer of shades. You need rotate the coin with a small angle to see the different shades.

A stream of random comments.

The 2018 design should make it easy to determine "frosted" vs "mirrored" varieties.

I wonder whether the bamboo forest behind the panda will be more evident when the coins are produced by one mint vs another.

This panda design should be very interesting on the larger silver and gold coins.  There is great opportunity for the hair on the pandas to be very three dimensional.

Peter, thanks for showing us the picture of the new design.

This one is not so bad. At least we get a close up. First time since 1995?

Looks like a real poor design.  With panda bullion coins trading so close to melt I think dealers/distributors will be taking a loss on these.

I actually like the design, and it is different than most every design I've seen for this bullion series.  I think this one will do quite well.  I'm a buyer of this coin, especially if dealers are selling them for a few bucks over spot. Thank you for sharing Peter.

It is great to hear that it could trade close to melt. I was a bit worried that something would be found to hype the cost. So collectors can breathe easy!

I am happy with this design but more importantly it is a distinct look thereby fulfilling the Panda coins' collector craving for something different each year and something to talk about, whine or extol!

This 2018 Gold Panda coin release seems to have the most magnified view of the panda so far.

This happened very fast.  I ordered some of the silver pieces, and I haven't received them yet.  They waste no time in making fakes.  So sad.

Fake kilo or not?.....

It has 1,000 gm of .999 silver stamped on it, but the eBay listing says it is silver colored/silver plated. If the eBay listing is right then its metal content claim is fake. That is enough for me. No need to argue about the copied design. If it walks and talks like a fake, it's a fake in my book (literally!).

From the moment I saw the 2018 coins in person it seemed the coins look much nicer than expected from the photos on the web. Here is my first attempt to capture the better qualities of this design. I hope others will try and improve on this one and post their results:

I wonder whether we will see varieties in the eyes?  This design creates a great opportunity to quickly discover varieties.

The frosting of the panda side will hopefully block the reflection of the camera lens. I'll definitely try photography when I buy this coin.

The video looks excellent. Well done! All of these take work, but I think last year's was more difficult to light well. There is some sort of new engraving process used on the dies for this coin and it seems easier to bring out the details.
