The Gold & Silver Panda Coin Buyer's Guide 3
« on: May 03, 2017, 05:08:45 AM »
So far I only have some sample copies...the main shipment is on its way. More information to follow...

By the way, I don't know if this qualifies as "heavy reading", but the books weigh around a kilo each.

Best wishes,

Now that your book is being mailed out, can you tell us some surviving pop numbers or maybe which are the rarest gold pandas?.... :confused1:

The rarest gold Panda coin is the 1991 5 kg tenth anniversary coin. Its mintage is ten and there are a couple of unusual stories about it told in the new book. It is one of many never previously told stories in this edition.

One side of the coin says 1,000 Yuan, the other side has what looks like an extra zero.... 10,000  Yuan.

Oh... 12oz vs 5kg.
That's a lot of gold. Must have been a feat to make in 1991.

Thanks for the tracking number. Even though book title says "Gold & Silver Panda Coin", I assume other metal issues like Platinum & Palladium are included? Thanks.

Yes, all the metals are covered. Also not in the title is that it Unicorns are included (pages 335-354). That was added in the second edition as a tribute to my late friend Nick Brown, who adored this coin series. The NPB catalog numbers for Unicorns are another tribute to the much-missed and never forgotten Nick P. Brown.

I got mine at 9:30am this morning.  Read it while standing in line to ship coins.  Thanks for promoting the coins as collectibles.

Let's hope collector demand comes back, April collectors were dumping coins at a record pace, May is looking like the same, it think the goldsheets are bringing coins to market.

Just got home from my sons baseball game, got him bathed, fed & put to bed. Now I have time to sit down with a glass of Pinot and enjoy the awesome new copy of The Gold & Silver Panda Guide ! What an awesome treat in the mailbox !

Good to see the familiar names on the acknowledges page and looking forward to read the new stories. Of course I like the pictures and mintage information but love the stories most of all.

Finally finished reading the book and thanks to my new found knowledge was able to attribute/classify all the coins in my collection by mint, date size and applicable varieties. Matched my collection to Huang Ruiyong's Star ranking list and desirable gold bullion Panda and came up with the following results:

==> Star (Ranking) List of Modern Chinese Medals <==
> Platinum <
4 Stars - Foreign Expo
1987 1 troz New York Expo
> Gold <
4 Stars - Foreign Expo
1988 1 troz Hong Kong
1988 1 troz 97th ANA
1988 1 troz Basel Expo 'Au' Version
1988 1 troz Basel Expo 'Pt' Version
1990 1 troz Zurich Expo
3.5 Stars - Foreign Expo
1987 1 troz New York Expo
1988 1 troz New Orleans Expo (x2)
1988 1 troz Munich
3.5 Stars - Money
1985 1/10 troz Bao Yuan Vault Protector
1990 1oz Bao Yuan Vault Protector
3 Stars - Foreign Expo
1987 1 troz San Francisco Expo
1987 1 troz New Orleans Expo
2 Stars - Foreign Expo
1987 1 troz Tong Tong
1989 1/4 troz New York Expo
> Silver <
3.5 Stars - Money
1987 5 troz Great Qing Dynasty Vault Protector
2 Stars - Money
1990 1 troz Bao Yuan Vault Protector

==> Star (Ranking) List Of Modern Chinese Coins <==
> Platinum <
4 Stars - Panda
1990 100 Yuan 1 troz Panda (x2)
3 Stars - Panda
1989 100 Yuan 1 troz Panda
2 Stars - Panda
1987 100 Yuan 1 troz Panda
1988 100 Yuan 1 troz Panda
> Gold <
3 Stars - Lunar
1985 150 Yuan 8 grams Ox
2 Stars - Lunar
1988 150 Yuan 8 grams Dragon
> Silver <
1 Star - Traditional Culture
1990 1/2 Yuan 2 grams Dragon & Phoenix

==> Gold Panda 'year priority' list arranged in 2012 by Huang Ruiyong according to research:
N 1998 Shenyang Large Date
N 2000 Shanghai Mirror
N 1999 Shanghai Small Date
N 1999 Shenzhen Guobao Serif
Y 1998 Shanghai Small Date (1 oz Au)
Y 1995 Shenyang Small Date (1 oz Au)
N 1995 Shanghai Large Date
Y 1989 Shenyang Large Date (1, 1/4, 1/20 oz Au)
Y 1994 Shenyang Small Date (1 oz Au)
N 1994 Shanghai Large Date
Y 1993 Shanghai Large Date (1 oz Au)
Y 1999 Shenyang Large Date (1 oz Au)
Y 2002 Shenzhen Guobao (1 oz Au)
Y 2000 Shenzhen Guobao (1 oz Au)
Y 1991 Shenyang (1, 1/4 oz Au)
N 1991 Shanghai
Y 1996 Shenyang Large Date (1 oz Au)
N 1996 Shanghai Small Date
Y 1997 Shenyang Large Date (1 oz Au)
N 1997 Shanghai Small Date
Y 1982 (1 oz Au)
Y 2001D (1 oz Au)
Y 1987Y (1, 1/4 oz Au)
Y 2006 (1 oz Au)

The above estimate is a very simple rough estimate of gold panda set rankings. In all reality as the population of panda enthusiasts grows, and as the amount of research into the gold pandas probes deeper, the above estimates will certainly need to be readjusted. Becoming an expert at hidden gems is congratulatory but I have not become that familiar (just better at it). Only by studying mountains of gold panda coins and research can one hope to acquire true expertise.

Hi everyone. Just curious if any of the mintage and estimated BU conditions changed from Volume 2? Are the stories new for each year coin? Just want to make sure before I order , thank you for any info.

My recollection is that it was mailed on the 15th. For overseas, I don't think it is late so far. With the second edition there were a few that took more than a month to clear customs.

My apologies for any order that is delayed. Based on past experience, overseas orders can take a month plus to deliver. The books are shipped by airmail, but customs can be quite slow to clear them. Any book orders that have not arrived will get straightened out when I return from China on June 6.

Also, if anyone is going to the Long Beach show you can buy or pick up books there from me. It is always an interesting show.

It can be shipped to China. You are in Shanghai? I can bring one for you the next time I visit the city, or even ship it from another Chinese city. I expect to be back in July sometime, but may only visit the north. That will cost significantly less than the $31.50 the US postal service charges.

Just got my autographed copy. Thanks!

Looks quite compact and should travel more easily. I'll have to look for a cover protector to preserve the book cover.

First time I read Book 2 I didn't know much about MCC so it really guided my early collection. Now let's see what I have since learnt and new areas of delight!

Great job and Bravo!  N31

While shipping books is different than shipping coins, one lesson I have learned in the last few years is to avoid buying or selling overseas, it simply isn't worth the risks and headaches.  I am sure I can make more money overall and offset the risk over the long term, but for me it isn't worth all the trouble.

Even traveling overseas doesn't make sense to me, I can sell $50k from my home to 10 different buyers at an expense of $350 for postage, insurance and packing materials or I could set up at HK show and sell same amount at an expense of $4350.  The difference of $4000 in expenses amounts to 8%, which means if I am buying inventory to sell in HK I must pay 8% less than if I am buying to sell from my home. This difference is too much to allow one to be competitive when buying coins, I don't think dealers understand the cost of doing business overseas.  For me to set up at Long Beach for three days is about $1200, which I can justify because the sum of my buys and sells easily exceed my business from home by factor of 2-3x, so the extra $400 in expenses amounts to 0.3% extra.

I feel for those that have been waiting 30-50 days for their books, it isn't Peter's fault, it is just the nature of overseas shipping.
