The 2016 Hawaii State Numismatic Association 1 oz. gold Panda is among my favorites.

Best wishes,

Peter, can you list out all the 1 oz gold Expo Panda issues after the 1990 Zurich Expo gold Panda? IIRC, 1 oz gold Expo Panda issues started again in 2014 or 2015. Thanks.

The list does not show the Hawaii identified by Peter. Also the Smithsonian Panda and the Shanghai Jewish Refugee issue. Are they not considered Expo issues?

The Hawaii Panda is a Show Panda. The other two are not.

So what are the Smithsonian & Shanghai Jewish refugee Panda classified as? Are they less/more desirable or just the same?

The list I posted was just show pandas and as of August 2016 Hawaii show hadn't been released.  The Smithsonian and Jewish medals are special issues.  Neither is better or worse based on designation of show panda vs special issues.  What makes a coin collectible is design, rarity and distribution channel.

Ironically today I received a Smithsonian 5oz gold in the mail, I know nothing about the coin except I liked the design, it has 300 mintage and distribution channel put the coin into strong hands with a wide distribution (govmint sold it to their legacy vip buyers at almost 100% premium to melt, which means it will be decades before they return to the market).

I call the other two you mention commemoratives, or commemorative medals. The Shanghai Memories medal has important historic significance.

I don't have it. I have 2 - 1988 New Orleans Expo Panda. If you don't have the 1988 NO Expo Panda, will you be interested in trading duplicate with me?

I have the NO Expo as well :-)

K. Cool. I did not pursue the 1988 SF Expo because it did not have a panda design (so I am okay without it).

The 01 and 02 pandas are my favorite. Eliminating the protection ring allows for a broader image. Composition of the image adheres  perfectly to the design rule of thirds. This combined with distinct foreground, middleground and background makes this coin a winner for me.  BTW I dont like the ones with Ds, they upset the balance.

I also like how the 01 and 02 go all the way to the edge.

From an artistic composition standpoint, I also like the 2008 G500Y with it's modern lines juxtaposed with the pandas (Not to be confused with the 1989 which IMO has the most "dated" look of any Panda, but I also love it for that fact). However, 2008's lack of bamboo stalks makes it lose a point in my book ;-)

It's so hard to pick a favorite, but for the moment I will choose the 1990 G500Y for its classic simplicity and well balanced composition. Especially a well struck example with deeply mirrored fields. To me it is an archetypal gold panda.

Oops I meant 1990 G100Y. I also think the 2012 30th anniversary is a cool one.
