« on: January 02, 2017, 02:38:40 PM »
Hi everyone, was thinking of getting the 5 coin NGC graded 2017 gold pandas. Dumb purchase? Should I just save up to buy older one? Lets me know your thoughts. Silent collector in Ft Lauderdale, Florida where it 83 today. LOL

Depends on your goals. If you want to collect them because you like them, go for it.
If you want to invest i think there are better options.

I think the 2017 pandas have such high mintage, that you would want to look at it more as a bullion purchase, rather than collectible coin. So if you can get them in NGC holders for close to bullion prices, that's cool I do that sometimes. I still buy the new ones to keep my collection going. But if you want it to have collector value, you should look at older stuff.

If you buy 2017 NGC graded pandas, maybe you should go for MS70 ones. The 69 ones are labeled just 10 bucks or less over the mint sealed ones.

Basically, I do not recommend NGC ones for 2016 and 2017 bullion pandas. They are graded in huge amount and there far more 70 ones than 69 ones. For 2016 gold 15 gram, the number of NGC MS70's is 5 times that of the 69s (14,109 vs. 2,858). This is the link https://www.ngccoin.com/census/world/china-panda-series/sc-367/g200y/

If you are a serial panda coin collector it makes sense to buy the 2017 release. At the same time you may wish to buy as far back as you can afford. There is a belief that the numismatic premium of panda coins started decreasing when the production was substantially ramped up after 2010.

If you are buying to make money in the short to medium term earlier release lower mintage panda is one of the options but it is not as straightforward as that and you need lots of experience to avoid getting burnt.

Whatever your decision now is a good time to buy since the spot price is still down.

Good luck and happy collecting!

Lots of recent coin and medal releases have been garnering a high proportion of MS and PF 70s. It's either that the minting design and technology processes are tip top or that quality control is getting rid of the lower grade coins before release.
