Li Yuan Hung with hat - not genuine
« on: November 27, 2016, 04:13:40 AM »
This coin from a big auction house was labeled as Not genuine by NGC. I do not know how to tell the difference from the genuine coin, but think it would be useful for other forum members to know that good quality fakes exist.

Yes, this is a high quality reproduction. IMO, the coin was artificially toned and had a relatively weak struck. There are many very small pimples at the edges of Chinese and English characters.

I had made adjustment of color and sharpness of your picture to see the pattern of toning.

Attached also pictures of NGC MS63 and NGC XF45 coins for comparison.

Please note that your questionable coin is an "OE" error version, instead of "OF" as NGC MS63 coin. NGC XF45 coin is an "OE" error version.

Yes thank you, now I see the differences, but still it was hard to tell that the coin is not genuine. In the end, I got my money back, and lost only some fees from bank exchange rates and transfers.
