1927 China Memento Dollar 1949 Restrike
« on: July 29, 2019, 07:37:08 PM »
This one came from a recent submission to NGC, and it was a surprise as I’ve never heard of this restrike. I am familiar with the 1949 Junk Dollar restrike, which I believe 30 million were minted in the US. Does anyone know if the two are connected?

The only info I can find online is the same info everyone seems to be using.
Varieties exist with errors in the English legend. For similar coins with 5-pointed stars dividing legends, see Y#318 (1912). In 1949 the Canton Mint restruck Memento dollars. There are modern restrikes in red copper and brass.

NGC clearly recognizes this strike.

Usually a restrike is not a good thing but there seems to be very few of these around. Is anyone familiar with these?? I don’t think PCGS recognizes this strike, at least I can’t find it on the website.

If anyone has additional info please add to this threads. Also if anyone has a price reference please post! Thanks

The GOLD version.

“Exceedingly Scarce Restrike Gold Memento Dollar

Republic of China. Gold Memento Dollar ND (1927) MS60 NGC, 1949 Restrike from slightly rusty dies, L&M-1104. Obv. Bust of Sun Yat-sen left. Rev. Value (One Yuan) in circle with english legend, MEMENTO-BIRTH OF REPUBLIC OF CHINA. Full, brilliant, luster with an adequate strike and a few light contact marks, and pin scratches on the obverse. The reverse exhibits faint, intricate, lint marks, and both sides display the minor pebbled areas from being struck with dies not properly stored. An extremely rare issue, with only a very few of the restrikes known. This is the single piece certified by NGC, or PCGS.

From the Ultima Collection”
