Original or fake ?
« on: August 31, 2016, 09:17:53 AM »
Hi to all,

Please find a scan of a coin which I already submitted on this forum. It was identified by a member as a Japanese (rather cynical) commemorative pseuso-dollar of the one year old invasion of Shangai in 1937.

However, it is not in silver clad copper but in a solid white metal, presumably silver, showing signs of wear as if having circulated for some time.

It weighs 27 grams ans has a diameter of 40 millimeters.

Any help welcome !

Hi Starfish,
The coin is a cupro-nickel reproduction from one of the many counterfeit factories in China. The souvenir coins made for occupying Japanese military would be 38.5 mm and 25.6 g. The Japanese souvenirs were copper with silver plate so the posted coin is over-sized and over weight.

Hi TomG,

Thanks for your diagnostic, which is probably right, although the metal does really not look cupro-nickel but rather like silver or base silver. Anway, it is not ferro-magnetic.

Kind regards,
