The latest word is that these coins have not yet shipped to distributors. That should happen fairly soon.

How have these sets done in the past?  Is there much of a demand for them as a set.  I guess my real question is this a better set to own where it is a commemorative of the mint than others that have been issued in the past.  As a silver panda collector I am interested in owning one.

Peter,
You may have been thinking about the new commemorative that was just released on Sunday. The 2016 S10Y All China Federation Return Overseas Panda. They were released on Sunday and hit the coin centers on Monday. The first ones didn't have the box or COA according to my dealer Frank ( thincat ). He tells me that they will be available to ship to me after Sept. 1st with the box and COA.

In reply to Taters question, the commemorative Panda series seems to be reasonably  popular in the States. I am not sure how the set is perceived in China but some of the individual commemorative coins are closely held and command high prices for the top grades.

Hi Russ,

Thanks but nope, it was the 120th Shenyang Anniversary Pandas I had in mind (see photos above that I took at the press conference). I'm glad that at least the silver coin is shipping.

Best wishes,

Russ,

Thanks.  I am curious on everyone's thoughts about this commemorative  commemorating a mint in place of bank if this will increase its value or popularity.  I know only time will tell but its worth thinking about as most of the commemorative s that I am familiar with are associated with banks.

Tater,
I really haven't seen a correlation between what is being commemorated and increase in selling price. Mintage certainly plays a part and availability is very important. The most expensive tend to be low mintage and if any can be found to buy. The current releases usually range from 30,000 to 50,000. Some of the early ones are 10,000 and 20,000 and tend to be higher in sales price. In a couple of cases the mintage was average but the coins were given out to customers and employees and not sold to the general population. As a result, very few have been offered for sale and the prices for those that do show up are quite high. At least those are my observations on the subject. To see what a complete list of coins for the set looks like, go to NGC registry and look it up. There are about 95 people building collections for the category so it is a reasonably popular set.
