Karma system
« on: May 23, 2016, 02:13:26 PM »
I haven't posted anything for nearly two weeks, and I got a "smite" - just recently.

Seriously?!

I believe my "trade count" speaks volumes - buyers and sellers I dealt with knew my words and money are good. Is "karma count" really an indication of one's credibility, or merely one's popularity? In some cases, e.g. Arif, poconopenn, fwang .. etc. high karma counts indicate the value of a member's knowledge and wisdom. There is no doubt in my mind there are some who use this system unjustly.

If I simply disagree with a person's opinion, is that a cause to "smite"?  I'd like to hear others chime in to share their views.   N39

+1 :) If I were you, do not worry about it that much. But, it can be annoying.

@dynamike51,

It is possible that some member who was reading one of you older posts saw something he/she didn't like and gave you a smite. These things happen to all of us. Sometimes, people cannot tell when we are joking vs being serious, and some people disagree with us and smite us. I think that as many people give +1s as give -1s, so overall, it is a break even.

Do not take offense. We have to remember that on an internet forum, it is so hard to really "get to know" a person.

People behind keyboards are fickle! I agree with Mirk, most likely someone read your old post and you got a smite. I will smite and add karma. If we keep giving each other roses we get a little complacent! Balance is good. I will say, I haven't smited you guys but it is good when it is an honest smite vs. an abusive smite. Same as overly generous applauds.

That said, if you have enough smites, does that mean you are smitten?

mirk, r3globe and PH ... thank you all !!   N31  N40  Like r3globe said, it's just "annoying" - nothing more.

Things to remind myself:
- Keep my opinions to myself.
- Keep my mouth shut.
- Go with the flow.

Mike, will give you a +1 if I can :)

I think the system can be enhanced so that +1 or -1 should be assigned on a per post basis, and if a particular post accumulates say 5 '+1' the author will get a '+1' in his karma, and vice versa........ just my 2 cents and of course I know this is just a side function and this kind of enhancement should and would never be a priority.

I don't blame the system.  I blame the childish immature unprofessional selfish self serving me me nature of some "users".  There are too many keyword warriors on the net.

lonemao,

actually, that's an excellent suggestion ! That would give this karma system better "balance" so no single member have the power to abuse it. (maybe lower the "5" to a "3")  Thank you.   N66

Got a PM from a very respected member who reminds me to "Please always speak your mind here. Otherwise the Forum is worthless."  This stamp of approval from him provided me strength to ignore the "personal sniper(s)".   N39

r3globe,

Thank you for your support.  N39 It's really not simply about my "karma count", as it's more about "justice" - that some member(s) misuse or abuse the system.  N32

There is no justice here but at least most of the people here are level headed and nice.
