Thickness of 1987-2000 Pandas
« on: May 19, 2016, 08:10:16 PM »
Hello, I'm new here and I got some questions :)
Few months ago I got a Panda Coin Set  as heritage and today I decided to look at them how many of them are counterfeits. I began with a Set of 1 ounce Pandas from 1987 to 2015 and realized that some of them are quite thick. I know modern 1ounce Pandas should have 31.1g 40mm diameter and 2,98mm thickness. All Pandas from 2003 to 2015 had more or less these values.
Some were only had 31.0 grams. Diameter was perfect- up to 40,10 mm. Thickness  made me some thoughts, because most of them had about 2,90mm. Are those still Differences that are tolerable? or are they all suspicious?^^

Next, the 2001/2002  Pair had again good weight and diameter but were only 2,6mm thick :/  How is it about them, is  that  normal with 2001/2 ones?

And now there is my main Question: all Coins from 1987,1989-2000  had a much thicker edge (most 3.1mm sometimes even 3.3mm) but the whole rest of the coin in the Center had about 2.9-2.95mm. So only like 1mm on the edge was thicker. Is this normal on these "early" Pandas or are they all fake?

I did not check them yet with a Neodym magnet, if i find one i gonna do that.

I hope I did not forget anything and you can help me :)

Greetings
Miro

Hi Miro,

Welcome to the forum.  Can you post some clear photos of the coins?

Weight and purity tolerances on Chinese coins are extremely tight. Odds are excellent that if you can notice the difference the coin is fake.

I made some pictures, I hope they are good enough so you can see the  relevant Details. I also gonna as the Dimesions of each Coin. I got me a neodym magnet, did not made a slide test, but at least none of  the coins is magnetic.  How long should a coin ring when I do the Ring-Test? They all ( except  1990, that one seems fake a.f.) have a clear sound which last 3 sec on most coins sometimes less. 1987 was really long, 6-8 sec maybe longer.  but my 2015/16 Pandas (quite sure they were real) also last only 3 sec, so I'm a bit confused... :(

1987: 33,26 g     40,04 mm, 3,2mm on the Edge, 2,8 in the middle
1989: 31,2 g       40,00        3,2                        2,8
1990: 31,1         40,0          3,2                        2,8        , horrible sound, so i think that one is fake for sure.
1991: 31,26       40,02         3,4                        2,7

And sorry for the horrible flash on the coins :/ could not make better pictures. If they are OK, tell me and I can upload from the other coins.

Welcome to the forum.

1987 1 oz. silver panda weighs about 33.7 gm. Your coin is slightly off the normal weight. This coin has a silver purity of 92.5%. 33.7 x 0.925 = 31.17 (1 oz.) I do not see any design issue of your coin.

All other coins shown in the pictures are genuine.

Thank you, nice to hear  that :) tomorrow I will upload the remaining Photos up to 2002, skipping the newer ones.
I'm not yet sure if i wanna keep  them and start collecting some Coins or sell them. But i start to like them so probably I gonna keep them a bit :)
Any orientation how much the complete set 1987-2015 would be worth? All Coins are in equal grades as the ones on the pictures, the newer ones maybe even less scratched.

Idea what this Coin is? Can't find it anywhere..

Greetings :)
