1983 silver and brass panda set with CoA and box
« on: March 17, 2016, 09:11:29 AM »
Hi All,

Lets make it my first post to this great forum, which I´ve just recently discovered. I was able to acquire a very special set of 1983 silver and brass Pandas with the COA and what I believe to be an original box they came in.

Now how would you value this set? Especially considering it has got the CoA and the box. Has anyone seen this kind set on sale or otherwise? Condition wise both coins have some toning, but no other major flaws that could not be restored.

Many thanks,
J

Do you have a COA for the brass coin?

Do you have a photo of the box closed and the undersurface; is this an original box?

Thanks.

No the CoA only for the silver one.

See below the photos. I can´t be sure the box being original. But certainly it looks like it could fit to the era. I bought it from a coin shop auction. Most likely ended to the auction from an estate (it was sold in a lot together with other commemorative coins from early 80´s / late 70´s)

Thanks JC

Wasn´t rediculously cheap but still a good value based on your estimate.

Welcome to the forum.

This is a nice set. Depending on the condition, the fair value can be anywhere between $1800 (PF67 for both coins) and $3200 (PF69 for both coins).

Really nice set. The 1983 silver panda is the first year silver panda and very popular.

Sorry the photos

This set was originally sold by Panda America. The box is actually made in the UK. It was not a big seller and is not commonly seen today.

Thank you for the info Peter, very interesting. Would you be able to give any kind of rough estimate or range on how many of these sets would have been sold originally?

Thanks,
J

I was told, "Not many." My impression is that the exact number is no longer known.

Decided to go with the NCS / NGC route. The brass was a mystery in term of grade but the silver one was pretty much in line with the expectations. Knew 69 was off the table because of some rubbing on pandas.
