Trend: China coins increasingly shared in Youtube videos
« on: September 27, 2015, 09:23:59 AM »
I've noticed an increasing number of people posting videos of their China coins.  It used to be only clearasvodka posting such videos  http://china-mint.info/forum/index.php?topic=9932.0 , but below are several videos posted just within the last month or so.  Many of these individuals seem to be in networks of general coin or bullion collectors (not China specialists).  The people posting the videos share images of their coins, their views on why they like them, and some background info (sometimes straight from a resource like Peter Anthony's book, with the book visible in the background).  This trend will surely raise awareness of China coins among collectors who don't yet follow them, get some individuals to purchase the resource books, and in general get more people hooked on collecting.  You can see from the comments section of some of these videos that people's eyes are being opened to China coins, and their interest is piqued.  If you are savvy with Youtube, perhaps consider sharing a video of one of your favorite coins to your network?  The broader the base of collectors, the better.

The list of videos below is shared to highlight the recent number.  The variety is interesting.  Not all are high quality in their information or their production value.

You can add mine to the list! I previously posted this or a variant of elsewhere. My first attempt. Haven't had time to do more:

Video of a 3-medal set (copper, silver & brass) depicting Xi Shi holding a pearl. Xi Shi or Shi Yiguang is one of the Four Beauties of Ancient China. She was recruited by her king to use her beauty, charms and subterfuge to bring down another (enemy) king. Imagine the risks and dangers this wonderful woman went through in the service of her king. She and other members of the group are revered in China and celebrated through the medium of artwork such as paintings, carvings, decorative ornaments, sculpture, medals, music, movies and clothing. This medal was released in 2011 by the Shanghai BT Mint, a private China mint. The designer and engraver is reputed to be Lin Feng.

Here's another recent video of some pretty coins posted by an individual who has grown to 377 YouTube subscribers.  In the holiday spirit of supporting those who generously share good photos of their coins and thereby interest others in collecting pandas, I'll share the link here.

"Variety of China Gold Panda Coins. Enjoy!!!"

I've been doing a few vids on some pandas I've been picking up recently. Here's my most recent video.

You're correct, there are only a handful of panda collectors in the YouTube space.

My pleasure, as I collect these. I will produce videos on them. There's a lot of info I've gained from here, so if you would like a mention feel free to let me know.

I see you have found my 2 oz Piedfort video :) I have quite a few videos on Youtube and more videos of pandas and other Chinese coins listed in a playlist on Youtube which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB03miYXKVpLAIgeP_Cz9fSBaui5YJ8c7 (I hope it's okay for me to link it here).

I haven't added many lately but will add quite a few in the upcoming weeks and months. Currently looking at improving the production value a bit but have found myself short on time lately, but all in due time!

Thank you Mirkkanen, I appreciate your comment! Hopefully I'll be able to upload quite a few interesting coins in the coming months, just sent off a submission to NGC and hopefully there'll be some good results.

I apologize in advance if posting this appears self-serving, but it is a coin video. I received a fair number of comments about it from China after it appeared last month. The video makers of this piece have a large and loyal following in China (a million views per posting). People tell me that the host is a very astute source of information:

Well done, Peter.  I am certain that with that interview you attracted a few more collectors to this interesting hobby.  Is it really a million views per posting?  That is an amazing!

I learned a few more things from that video, too.

Keep up the good work.  You are an ambassador for panda collecting  :thumbup1:

Wow, thank you very much. Yeah, it really seems to be a million. The channel that carries the program arranged for Chinese entertainment stars to endorse them once they attracted so many views. I think the editing is quite interesting.

When I sent the link to my friends a handful replied that they already saw it. I am sure that the more online video exposure for Panda coins and other Chinese coins, the better.

Nice video.

The collector base of panda is small vs. circulated coins or other commemorative coins inside China. The video maker of this piece is a dealer for foreign coins and does not have million followers as suggested by your Chinese friends. Any MCC video viewed by more than 5,000   will be considered as very successful outcome. As attached web link of this video maker which shown a total of 27 videos and five special sections with a total viewer about 3.6 million during last several years. The highest viewing of single video is about 3,400. Your video already has 1945 viewers in about one month.  IMO, this is a very good outcome

猫眼 is a movie channel, not the same website as 猫眼看币. They are not linked.

I will try to get some clarification on this. I showed this same link to a Chinese visitor at the ANA and was told me that it is the personal channel of the video maker. A few moments later the person I spoke to announced, "I found it!" We then watched the video on her phone from a different internet source.  So there may well be a much larger channel. I only have the one I was given originally.

I have also seen the promotional video with the Chinese stars. In my mind, that is an unlikely development for a channel with a limited number of views. Anyway, I will ask about this.

I am very glad that you like the video. Thanks!

Here is the google search for 猫眼. You will not find your video.

https://www.google.com/search?source=hp&q=%E7%8C%AB%E7%9C%BC&oq=%E7%8C%AB%E7%9C%BC&gs_l=psy-ab.12..0l4.3937.3937.0.11288.1.1.0.0.0.0.132.132.0j1.1.0.foo%2Cnso-ehuqi%3D1%2Cnso-ehuui%3D1%2Cewh%3D0%2Cnso-mplt%3D2%2Cnso-enksa%3D0%2Cnso-enfk%3D1%2Cnso-usnt%3D1%2Cnso-qnt-npqp%3D0-1633%2Cnso-qnt-npdq%3D0-5608%2Cnso-qnt-npt%3D0-1229%2Cnso-qnt-ndc%3D2051%2Ccspa-dspm-nm-mnp%3D0-06145%2Ccspa-dspm-nm-mxp%3D0-153625%2Cnso-unt-npqp%3D0-1506%2Cnso-unt-npdq%3D0-4694%2Cnso-unt-npt%3D0-061%2Cnso-unt-ndc%3D300%2Ccspa-uipm-nm-mnp%3D0-007625%2Ccspa-uipm-nm-mxp%3D0-053375...0...1..64.psy-ab..0.1.130.G2p6IYnpEz0

The vast majority of views take place on Wechat and Headline (kind of like Yahoo! News) channels in China. Weibo is another channel. Google will not find these. Not every article or video attracts a million views, but some have in the past.

Also not counted are how many times the links are copied and re-posted, which can be quite substantial. The  interviewer, who specializes in numismatics, has around 35,000 subscribed followers who are very active.

The following are links for her Weibo and Taobao store. She has 1618 followers at her Weibo. The video of your interview also can be seen in this site (bottom of the page), but not too many viewers.

The following is result of Baidu search of 猫眼看币. Your video can not be found either. Both Google and Baidu can find Wechat and Weibo. Your original Wechat link did not show in both searches.

Please try 今日头条 on Headline and 猫姐 on Wechat. Some of her videos have attracted huge responses, others less so I was told. Typical. I think Headline is the channel that gets the biggest numbers when there is a hit. Weibo has lower numbers, but attracts a specific market.

Finally, I found the link you posted in Google and Baidu Search. I had to paste the video title “猫眼人物:专访熊猫币专家彼得·安东尼”to the Search. Unfortunately, there was not too many viewer.

https://www.google.com/search?q=%E7%8C%AB%E7%9C%BC%E4%BA%BA%E7%89%A9%EF%BC%9A%E4%B8%93%E8%AE%BF%E7%86%8A%E7%8C%AB%E5%B8%81%E4%B8%93%E5%AE%B6%E5%BD%BC%E5%BE%97%C2%B7%E5%AE%89%E4%B8%9C%E5%B0%BC&ei=cgCfWaiBHITojwTmoJfQCQ&start=0&sa=N&biw=1280&bih=570

http://www.baidu.com/s?ie=utf-8&f=8&rsv_bp=0&rsv_idx=1&tn=baidu&wd=%E7%8C%AB%E7%9C%BC%E4%BA%BA%E7%89%A9%3A%E4%B8%80%E4%BB%A3%E2%80%9C%E7%8C%AB%E2%80%9D%E7%8E%8B%E7%9A%84%E7%86%8A%E7%8C%AB%E5%B8%81%E6%83%85&rsv_pq=82b09f830000d4ab&rsv_t=381dMD7NOYE8HxOcm0168XeSMaMcrtOmm36OUFxVLiC2%2FwxCpOVO6H2HrS4&rqlang=cn&rsv_enter=1&rsv_sug3=1

Baidu is a very powerful search engine. For example, I can paste the title of this thread in Baidu and find it.

Hi Poconopenn,

Thank you very much for your research efforts. It is very helpful to me and I am sure many others here. One of the links you posted above led back to the CCF, but on the other I found the video. I also watched a Chinese Pizza Hut commercial and a movie preview, haha.

Were you able to find anything on Headline? My interviewer didn't promise me a million views, but Headline is the place where she achieved that before. Her subscribed followers are much higher than the numbers we are talking about here (not sure if I am allowed to give the exact number publicly) across all channels, so views of the interview have a good chance to reach a substantial audience for a numismatic video.

One objective fact is that I have sold a couple of dozen English copies of The Gold & Silver Panda Coin Buyer’s Guide 3 to mainland China since the video appeared. I also quickly ran out of books at the Hong Kong Coin Show.

Thanks again.

Best wishes,
Peter Anthony

The searches conducted for your video were based on your interviewer’s ID and video title. If your interviewer use a different ID or video title at Headline (今日头条), your video will not be shown up in the searches.

The website of 今日头条 (correct translation is Today’s Headline) is http://www.toutiao.com/ . It is a very popular website, definitely more than million viewers daily.  Anyone can apply for a job to become a reporter or author for this site. They will receive compensation for any article and video published in this site.

Here is link of your video at Today's Headline (at the middle of the page). Unfortunately there are very few viewers.

Your interviewer also has a Weibo account for discussion of Bitcoin investment. She claims to be a financial specialist and approved author for Today's Headline. This site has 4750 followers, three times more than her coin site.

It is interesting to note that she has not post your video in any coin related website, which will reach more coin collectors. Perhaps, you should ask her to post your video at jibi.net or coin001.com.

Just uploaded this video of a 1994 1/4 oz Gold Panda in OMP that I sent to NCS+NGC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFUyL_HL7f0

Care to guess the grade?

I like your video. It is short but there is enough time to appreciate the coin showcased from different angles. Longer could be boring. There is no commentary but that is not a drawback as it allows one to focus all attention on the coin itself.

The lighting is a bit low making the coin look more like an orange gold like the Krugerrand but I don't see that as a problem since it allows visualization of the coin design lines without other optical distraction.

The background music sounds like something from an Egyptian pyramid raiders' movie where they plunder all those gold coins and chalices!

Hope for a 69 and pray that 68 is not an option; once in a while someone hits a 70. Good luck!

Good job!

Right on the money,  it got a 69! I agree on the lighting, I'll try to use better in the future for sure.

I always enjoy watching the videos that give tours of the coin shops in China.

Here is a walk through a Beijing coin shop in December 2017 by clearasvodka.  I see a few older silver pandas, but older gold pandas don't appear to be in stock in the cases.
