1984 Silver Great wall- Real or fake?
« on: October 31, 2014, 09:53:30 PM »
A Chinese friend bought this medal and is concerned if it is real. He says the other medals like this have size and metal purity on the medal and this one doesn't. The rim photo is poor but he tells me there is nothing on the rim anyway. Any help will be appreciated.

The 1984 Great Wall discussed extensively here, http://china-mint.info/forum/index.php?topic=4488.0 and here, http://china-mint.info/forum/index.php?topic=10728.0 has no size and metal purity information on the medal.  Example: http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/index.aspx?CertNumber=3300103-059
But some of them does have serial number stamped on the rim.  Example: http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/index.aspx?CertNumber=3822920-002

So the mint state plum flower may have two versions, one with serial number, one without.  The knowledge is still evolving...

When this medal is in double sealed package, be very careful and let NGC to determine its authenticity. This pouch looks very fresh. The pictures are not clear enough to see the 3-dimensional details.

That is what I advised him to do as the final test. He is looking for a little assurance that it is not an obvious fake before he spends the time and money to send it to NGC.

i have asked many dealers and have checked all chinese coin books, 80% people seen the edge got ag999 3两3, only 20% people still have seen without any words or numbers on rim edge。

but nobody seen got another series number on that, only have ag999 3两3 on the rim
chinese old medals always got many different versions and for sure 100% nobody knows exactly mintage, thats the chinese old medal style.

for example, 1995 dragon boat 5oz gold medal, offical and mint all said got number on the rim, but in fact they forgot to put the number,  all no number, sold on 2008  for 160000usd

and 1993 12oz panda gold coin, all no number, like 3rd wall,  sold on 2012 for 352000usd
