This MS 1981 1 Fen from red folder (Shenyang Mint), the most expensive fen coin, IMO, is in an excellent condition (Gem BU).

The most recent auction for MS 67 fetched $3,700.

http://www.coin001.com/hack.php?H_name=bigauction&action=detail&aid=267&skip=1

Check the picture of the above auction MS67 and compare the pictures of these two coins, IMO, The seller might be surprised by the final value, but the buyer definitely bought this coin very happy any paid a very reasonable price.

I mentioned that to a coin buddy back in China. It was higher than my prediction, and my snipe tool did not even fire, as my pre-set price was lower than the realized price :( No cherries to pick anymore in auctions.

You will find cherries to pick elsewhere!.....

I believe that pandamonium provided info to show a current eBay listing, not an item that had already sold.

ChineseCoinsLive has all the prices and helps users make (and save) $thousands.

In this case, would someone have paid $6000, (as alleged), had they been aware of the April 2017 sale for $1674?

The 1984 PF 70 HK Expo is still on ebay and same ebay number i provided.   pandacoins88 is ebay seller.     Why can't you find it?     I did not post it was sold....
I have no clue what Clark sold his 1986 PF 69 12 oz HK Expo for.    $6,000 was asking price.     $1,674 for another PF 69 is almost too cheap to believe.    A member here had 2 PF 69 for sale about 3 yrs ago and was asking $2,500 each on ebay.    I know one sold close to asking price back then so why the cheap sale today?    Maybe the market is finally waking up to the 1984 to 89 HK Expo silver pandas as they have low planned mintage mostly 1,000.    1987 is 1,500 and 1989 is 2,000 planned.     Yes they are low value medals and not high value coins.   At some point the coins vs medals argument will go away.     1982 gold pandas are medals, yes?.......

No, they are legal tender coins. In 1982, the China Mint sent a letter, or affadavit, to that effect to American Customs.

Pandacollector, are all medals legal tender or just official mint?.....

By the way, Clark's 86 PF 69 HK Expo 12 oz silver panda did get $6,000......Do not underestimate the first year of 5 oz and 12 oz HK Expo silver pandas highest grade PF 69.....

Medals are not legal tender, but the 1982 Panda is a coin not a medal.

A medal that is struck and certified by an official mint is an "Official Mint Medal", but still is not money, or legal tender. Medals struck by private mints are simply "Medals". As an aside, if an official medal states a weight and fineness on it (like .999 Ag) then that quality is guaranteed by a government. That is one of the benefits of an officially struck coin, or medal. I will buy private medals for my collection if they are interesting, but I think it is important to understand the difference between official and private.
