This really sucks! Sorry to hear about it. Everybody who buys or sells coins online empathize with this experience. I hope it gets resolved soon.

Man that really stinks. From what I understand about ebay rules, the ebay seller is still responsible for it at this point and the buyer should be covered by Paypal. Good reason to use registered mail when possible, even though it's a bit more of a hassle.

Seller should have just waited in line to ensure the package was scanned, assuming they did take it to post office as represented.

Seller refunded my money today, he is convinced that coin is lost and started insurance claim.  I will be surprised if Hugh Wood pays, since there is no proof the item was even shipped.  Will update once the claim gets paid or denied.

Lesson learned from this transaction and others in 2016:
1) Never allow a seller to simply put the package into box without getting a scan.  I was shocked when he told me that he dropped it off at the box.  Then added he lives in a good neighborhood so don't worry. Always require seller gets the package scanned at post office.

2) Avoid buying high price item from someone you don't have a history of business with or doesn't have experience shipping high value items.

3) Avoid buying from someone that does a lot of back and forth on price, that is always a red flag that if someone outbids you by a cent you will not get the coin even after seller commits, the relationship has no value, you are just number with a paddle in your hand.

4) Avoid doing off ebay transaction with sellers you haven't done business with on eBay, I tired to buy this coin on eBay, but when I got the counter offer I called the number in the listing and did the deal offline to make the price within my buy range.

In 8 years this is only the second time I have lost package either sent to me or I sent to someone.  In that example, I shipped 4 lbs of silver in small flat rate box in December 2008, which I put in a paper express envelope, but at that time didn't tape all edges, so inner box riped out of the paper envelope and broken envelope arrived. Post office paid my $5000 insurance claim, however the package value was $6500 so I still took a small loss. Now I limit package weight 2 lbs, put small box inside paper envelope, then put envelope into another padded envelope, with all three packages edges taped so there is no way for the box or envelope to rip open.  Ever since never had an incident, despite hundreds of shipments to Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Well all I can say is the seller didnt send someone else their coin that was bought from him on ebay. ??? Just saying, I cant think of anyone taking a $4K coin to mail at post office and put in box without scan to show it was at post office. But what do I know?

Sounds like he put it in his mailbox and put the flag up.  Sad part is no scan no insurance.  Over a certain dollar amount registered mail is the way to go or fedex.  Sounds a little odd if you ask me.

"...good neighborhood so don't worry...".

People forget there is an amazing thing calls ... car ... that allows bad elements from one location to appear in another location fairly quick.

He put it in the large blue boxes along the street, not his personal box, if he did that I would have told him to take it out and go to post office.

Have you contacted NGC regarding this coin?  Someone might try to get the coin into a slab with a different number.  I don't know NGC's current technology, but perhaps they now take photos of the coin in a way that records a digital fingerprint of all the unique imperfection of its surface.  If someone tries to crack out a coin and resubmit it, NGC's computers might be able to recognize it?  Moreover, since this is such an infrequently submitted coin in the US, it might be worth telling NGC to be on the lookout for someone sending a raw (cracked out) 2000 G1/2 mirror for grading.
