Valentine Bamboo Panda Medals on Offer to Pricepedia Subscribers.

With the latest edition of the Pricepedia came the announcement of the availability of a new panda medal. It currently seems to be on offer to only Pricepedia subscribers. It is not clear if this will change in future.

The Valentine Bamboo Panda medal appears to be the first heart shaped panda coin/medal and was produced by the Shenyang Mint.

My assumption at the moment is that our forum member, Mr. Peter Anthony, is somehow involved with this project but I do not have any specifics. I wish him the best of luck for success in this venture.  N31

Specifications (AFAIK)

Mintage Year: 2016.
Mint: Shenyang Mint, China.
Material: Silver.

Fineness: 99.9% purity.
Weight: 1oz.

Strange timing for this release.  The medal would have done great if released in January 2016 ahead of valentine day.  Now it would be strange to give a 2016 medal as a gift for 2017 valentine day.

It would be interesting to learn about who commissioned this product and thinking behind the timing of the release.

KeepOnTrying! Dimensions: 40mm x 40 mm.

To Key Date Panda: this project was not originally conceived as a Valentine's Day gift. However, everyone who saw it called it the Valentine Panda and the name has stuck. So far, being out of season does not seem to diminish its appeal.

The Valentine Bamboo Panda will be offered here to Forum readers starting this weekend (assuming any supply remains - the total mintage is not available).

Best wishes,

Interesting design and nice that it's somewhat of an exclusive, will there be an option for overseas shipping?

Hi Peter,

Is the heart-shaped silver valentine 1 oz panda the only one in this issue? Are there any other coins that are of different size, shape, or material also planned in this issue? The ANA Anaheim series kind of surprised me with a 50 gram silver announced later.

Medal on eBay: #262691129960. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2016-China-Panda-1st-Heart-Shaped-Panda-1-Oz-Silver-Coin-Mint-Sealed-Low-COA-25-/262691129960?hash=item3d299c8a68:g:GdgAAOSwXeJYD8c3

I have been sending out the low number COAs with the initial orders. The offer for ungraded Valentine Pandas will end soon. If anyone wants to order there are still some available for the original $118.88. http://www.pandacollector.com/valentine-pandas-2016.html

There will be an offer for NGC-graded ones later, but at higher prices. There was a post earlier about Early Release labels. I don't know about this, but there will be a new label used for the Valentines.

Many thanks to everyone who has already subscribed to China Pricepedia and ordered the Valentine Pandas.

Peter,

Do you know the sponsor of this medal?  I can not find inside China.

IMO, the issuance of this medal may have something to do with the very successful auspicious culture series (heart-shaped love coin is part of this series), started in 2015, with a mintage of silver coins at 60,000.

I had never seen it before, but there will be representatives of the Shenyang Mint at the Beijing Expo. I will ask about it. I wonder who designed it? It is old, though, so we need to find someone who remembers it.

Yes, they will be offered through China Pricepedia first. I don't know the exact date. It partly depends on how soon I can get back from China and when they arrive from NGC.

As an aside, China Pricepedia still has subscribers from its first issue in 2010 and, of course, many others since. It is my intention to always offer anything interesting to them first. Thank you, everyone.

Good question. I have no idea if these are connected to the Auspicious Culture series (which I like and own). The Valentine Pandas are a product of the Shenyang Mint. Your question should really be directed there.

After a day to reflect on this, I think that the Valentine Panda is not directly connected to the Auspicious Culture series. Perhaps it is an early part of a trend? I hope that helps.

Peter,

This Valentine panda medal has a design issue. The moon does not associate with the happiness (快乐) as shown in the reverse design. Usually, it delineates the sadness for lovers who have to be separated far away and can not see each other in Chinese literatures. The better design will be to change the “happiness” to “think of you” (思念). This is the reason for me to wonder if the sponsor of this medal is not located in China, but foreign origin, who may want to take advantage of the very successful heart-shaped wedding (love) set in auspicious culture series, issued in last two years.

Hi Poconopenn,

I think that design issues should be discussed with designer, or perhaps the Shenyang Mint itself.

The Valentine Panda is entirely designed by the Shenyang Mint and made at the Shenyang Mint. There is a COA to that effect. In addition, to my best knowledge, the words on it are the words of the Shenyang Mint. If you are asking if I chose those words, the answer is no. Perhaps there is more than one way to interpret the theme, or perhaps the artist had her own purpose?

I fell in love with the Valentine Panda the first time I saw it. It is really my honor to bring attention to the Shenyang Mint's, and especially Ms. Chang Huan's, outstanding work.

Best wishes,

I think the Valentine bamboo panda is actually one affiliated with the Hawaii HSNA show pandas. Apart from the heart shape, the design elements are highly like those of the HSNA pandas, e.g. the harvest moon, peonies, bamboos. Besides, they are all minted by the Shenyang mint at about the same time.

You should see if NGC can create a special label for you, "Last Strike" or "Late Release", it could sell for nice premium at pop of 2.

Peter did confirm earlier in the thread only 980 mintage.

Those would be nice complements to the highly desired Early Releases and First Strikes NGC labels

By the way, the other day I did see the ngc census for the valentine pandas. 300 something of them are graded. All are designated Early Releases except one and the majority are 70 ones.

There are 250 NGC graded examples that will later be offered to China Pricepedia subscribers. The label on those is special beyond being Early Releases. As I am still in China I haven't actually held one myself, yet.

If others are graded they must be by subscribers who already sent them in. I expect those will have the standard label.

The $118 offer will definitely end when I return stateside and probably never be repeated. A high percentage of the 250 were graded PF70. Pricing for graded Valentine Pandas is not yet final, but they will also be for subscribers.

Hi Peter,
I will be interested in a 70 when you do sell some as both of mine just graded 69.

The 70 went to NCS?  Or just NGC?

I like this idea. Unfortunately, NGC has a rule about not making less than 100 labels.

I was accidentally involved in the creation of this rule. A few years ago CGCI handed out samples of 10Y silver Pandas at the BICE (Beijing International Coin Exposition) Panda introduction event. Back then this was an invitation only gathering (it was opened to the public the following year). A friend and I acquired four of them – two for us and two to give to other friends.

Minutes later we ran into a pair of NGC executives in the hotel lobby and sat down to talk. During the conversation we showed them our new Pandas and the idea of grading came up. There was concern that this would make the coins artificially rare. In the end, though, it was agreed as the source was confirmed and no rule existed against doing it. The coins came back with a special label for BICE, but NGC soon changed the policy to a minimum of 100 for a special label. This is to avoid the creation of "artificial rarities." Our BICE coins really did deserve a special label, imo; according to mint sources these samples are slightly different than the later production run Pandas and can be identified.

To the best of my knowledge all four of these NGC BICE Pandas remain with their original recipients.

BTW, another grading company produced a similar label, but my friend and I are convinced that happened only after word of our submission became known.

Which year's silver pandas were these? How different are they from the regular pieces?

It was 2013 or 2014; I need to check. I can see that the luster is a little different than the later strikes that I am familiar with. Perhaps there are other differences, too.

Peter, i have contacted a few collectors to check out your heart silver pandas.    Strange, emotional and positive responses.     Your heart panda has the most popular design seen in a long time.      My suggestion is for a 5 oz heart silver panda.    Not a thick one as most new issue are, but a large diameter like the early issue.    Large diameter heart silver panda w/ same design as your 1 oz will be a big hit............

I agree a 5oz would be nice gift item, especially if it could be sold by late January.  Great job sponsoring this medal and distributing it widely to a large collector base.

Noooooooooooooooooo.  Not the same design.  Given the larger surface, I want creativity and more detail/design similar to the approach of the early panda where each size design is different.

History shows that there is relatively little interest in large sized silver pandas, doesn't it? Recent year expo pandas certainly tell this story. And who here collects early large silver pandas?

There are many that collect early year, large silver pandas and other large MCC.    That is why some carry a big price tag.    Due to large diameter they do not get high grades.     Last 1986 PF 69 HK Expo silver panda 12 oz i saw was about 2 to 3 yrs ago sold for under $2,500 as a example.    Many look to be undervalued for now.
Out of curiousity how are sales of the heart silver panda?.......so far they are the best design of all new issue medals from the feedback i get.....

At some point, wasn't the 1996 12 oz silver with mintage I believe around 800 selling over 10K+?

The 1994 and 1997 large size silver Munich medals are examples of big ticket items. I think that size is not the only factor in popularity, or unpopularity, of numismatic items.

I can't help but add that large size modern Chinese coins lost a true friend and advocate when Nick Brown passed away. The consequences of that sad, untimely event are still being felt today and more than most people realize.

Ngc says it is a PF one, but the certificate does not say so. The COA mentions the word "bullion" but does not say explicitly it is mint state or proof. Comparing with some the bullion 1oz silver pandas and also some proof panda silver medals, I personally think it is more like an MS.

The Valentine Panda is proof in quality. The language on the certificate is related to customs.
