Mr. Zeng Chenghu, the artist who designed and engraved the Ancient Pagoda medal series, recently published a book entitled Heritage of Hand-Engraved Coins and Medals. In the book, he discussed the European heritage of hand-engraving in coin and medal minting, as well as the tradition of hand-engraving developed mostly at Shanghai Mint. In addition to the discussions, Mr. Zeng listed many hand-engraved works from Europe, and ALL the hand-engraved medals with their artists from Shanghai Mint. It is an excellent reference book for those who are interested in hand-engraved coins and medals, as well as in minting technology in general. It is in Chinese only, priced at RMB88. To go with this book, Mr. Zeng hand-engraved a 80mm medal showing the two techniques of hand-engraving used at Shanghai Mint, knifing and chiseling. This medal has a copper version and a brass version, each with a mintage of 100. Please see the pictures below (taken from Citykunan's post on coin001.com)
