Title: Sharing: Colored and gold-plated lunar silver medals
Post by: PandaOrLunar on May 30, 2013, 06:38:06 PM
Sharing.

Figure a better overall picture is presented if they are in the same page.

Colored and gold-plated silver 1 oz medals.  Some are extra medal from "Prestige set", "Premium set", etc.  Some are individual?

Nice collection of prestige-set lunar medals. I understand the oval-shaped ones were minted by Shenzhen Guobao. Are all of the round ones also products of Shenzhen Guobao?

These are not mine.  I figure if I pull them together into one area, it will spark some discussion and knowledge sharing.

This side? Not plated but... are you asking for the reverse/dated side?

Some collectors say 500 mint while others say less and others say 2000.    03 is when Chinese were allowed to buy gold/silver.    Why would anyone want to buy a expensive Premium Gold Panda set w/ different box/coa and worthless silver color lunar medal?   (worthless back then)    The buyers would just want the Gold Set not Premium.    So i agree w/ the lower mintage numbers.   The Monkey for $600 has 4 watchers.   I get emails saying the dealer/collectors have targeted this Color Lunar.    True?    Makes sense to me........could actual mintage be under 500?   Where are the actual mintage numbers coming from?....

wg since you have the COAs and OMPs can you send one of each medal to NGC together with photocopies of the COAs to enable them start grading and encapsulating those medals. PCGS cannot be wrong? That will be of great service to those who do not have the COAs. We shall all appreciate your assistance in this matter. Thanks.

I sent these in many years ago to NGC and they wouldn't grade them, because they are considered after market product.  The color on the coins was not done by the Mint, but 3rd party according to NGC, which made them ineligible to be graded.  I sold many of these for around $30.  If NGC is willing to grade them, then price would surely rise to over $100.  Now I wonder if the color was done by the mint and NGC had it wrong back then.

The 1997 to 1999 color proof pandas were colored by a Swiss mint?      NGC had it wrong back then but figured out these Color Lunars are official mint.     Looks like demand/price for these beauties is picking up......

The fair current value (auction @ ebay) for the Panda Premium Set Medals should be for OMP/PFUC69:

1 Oz AG Lunar Series 2003 - Goat Colorized: 150 Dollars
1 Oz AG Lunar Series 2004 - Monkey Colorized: 200 Dollars
1 Oz AG Lunar Series 2005 - Rooster Colorized: 150 Dollars
1/10 Oz AU Lunar Series 2005 - Rooster Hologram: 300 Dollars
1 Oz AG Lunar Series 2006 - Dog Colorized: 200 Dollars
1 Oz AG Lunar Series 2007 - Pig: Not released
1 Oz AG Lunar Series 2008 - Rat Colorized & Gold Gilded (Mintage each 500): 150 Dollars
1 Oz AG Lunar Series 2009 - Ox Gold Gilded: 150 Dollars
1 Oz AG Lunar Series 2010 - Tiger Gold Gilded: 200 Dollars
1 Oz AG Lunar Series 2011 - Rabbit Gold Gilded with Ruby: 200 Dollars
1 Oz AG Lunar Series 2012 - Dragon Gold Gilded with Pearl: 200 Dollars

Some medals are sold for more Money, but i think the Prices above are currently ok.

I search some over months, but not one Piece.

Equally or more important is their value as Collector pieces given that they were originally minted for use as part of Elite Yearly Panda sets. They become very useful if you are reverse engineering such sets. You can even get a COA (either for the elite set or just the yearly fractionals set) off eBay to complete your buildout!   N38

A PFUC69 Rat 2008 was sold for 300$. Price goes stronger.

Ive send last time in the first Lunar Dog 2006. Its now avaiable to grade.

And I received a package with the Gold 2005 1/10 from Heritage. There should be 1k Pieces, but never see.

Just back from NCS/NGC. My interest in these medals was initially for use in replicating the configuration of prestige gold panda sets of the past. Now that I am looking at these five medals I am beginning to wonder if to collect them as a standalone set of colored lunar medals because they look good together!

Nice Collection :)

But NGC did an error, your rat is not colorized, its Gold plated, but listed as Colorized. Both versions have a mintage of 500 pieces.

Gold = Yellow = Color = ?Colorized!  :001_unsure:

Given NGC's prior history of refusal to grade these medals I am happy with whatever they call it, but great observation and comment. Thanks.

Nice start KOT.  I didn't realize anyone was collecting these as graded coins, NGC only recently started grading these.  I submitted a few to make a set for myself, didn't realize why I didn't have 2007, thanks GoldenLord for the info.

I have extra Monkey ($300) and Rat gilt ($175) I would be willing to trade for 2008-2010 colorized NGC PF69 or sell.

KOT NGC will fix the label on your 2008 for free, just send it in as mechanical error.

These gorgeous medals were not collected until recently as a seller in China told me they were not China Mint.    Now that NGC has graded them and the slab says Official mint medal, they are in demand.      Similar to the 1990 HK Scenery set, rare medals are avoided until information is researched or becomes official.    There are probably many more valuable medals that are undiscovered........that means opportunity......

They are from 2007. Luckpawn have it still listed, the Set for only 150$. GF says, they doesnt have the eye appeal like the sweet lunar coins here. The mintage is higher. Atm u cant find any of the colored lunars.

The Door Gods are still a question mark for most collectors/dealers.     They need research.    No one has come up w/ any information on them so they are not popular.    They are the only color God medals and beautiful in hand.     It may take some time for them see demand but that should happen.    Lots of unknown medals.    At least the Color Lunars have been discovered.   They are rare because the dealers tell me the top collectors have been buying them for a few years so they probably own most of them.     Same old story, those that have inside information are buying them up before the rest of the collectors understand.    Both color medals are outstanding........ Prices on all colored went up and then down.    Typical of MCC, up-down, up-down, just like manipulated bullion.      The important thing is to have in hand the ones you want and forget the price up-down because we all know bullion will eventually go to the moon.......
I know of many people that i convinced to buy bullion.    When prices are up they dance the jig, when prices are down they become bitter.   These are weak hands that don't get the picture so they go off on a emotional roller coaster...  They are better off w/ paper instruments...

Gilt and gold plated or gold inlay silver pandas have a higher price as they are more popular.     1st yr of gilt gold panda is the 1996 Beijing International Coin Expo.    Correct?.....

See photo.  Is this the 1st NON-panda MCC w/ gilt or gold inlay?   1997 (fighting) Ox silver.
Since gilt pandas are popular why not other MCC?     In a slow market this may not mean much but when the market gets hot then maybe it will.......any opinions?....

Not to disparage Jim Rogers but he made his money with the Quantum Fund in the 1970's. He retired after that and though I follow him and actually met him in NY one time. Since his retirement Jim has been calling for an economic Armageddon weekly. He has been wrong more then correct since the 1980's. He has been correct regarding Asia's rise to an economic powerhouse but it's a huge mistake on his part to underestimate America. Just to give an example. America has been hard at work for several decades at building an under ground super grid using hydrogen cooled nuclear reactors which will set the U.S. apart from every other country for many, many decades. Never count American ingenuity out.

I do not underestimate yankee know how.    Past articles say we have space satellites w/ laser weapons too.     China has problems but they own the gold and will be a major player in the world economy.     We have never seen a challenge to the USD in our lifetimes so the majority cannot believe it.     China's Yuan will rise and the world will wake up to Chinese money.    The best of Chinese money is gold/silver coins/medals minted in China.     Chinese demand and upcoming world demand could have a big impact.....

Again, i called Gov Mint twice for actual mintage but no reply yet.      China Mint could have actual mint numbers as first yr is 2003.      Could actual be much lower than 500?     Today more opinions say rare but many say common junk....

China/Asia dealers/collectors once thought these Color Lunars had a huge supply in Germany.      Then members from Germany posted here and i asked German sellers, they all said rare in Germany.       I asked 2 dealers in China recently and they said rare in China and rare overall.     Now the Chinese/Asian admit they are rare.         About 4 yrs ago a expert told me he was buying these papercut lunars, then about 2 yrs ago they were graded.     The expert was right again as always.       Today the general conclusion is the Color Lunars are rare.    Gotta admit they are beauties and prices are very reasonable...

Gov Mint says they are the sole distributor of the Prestige (Premium?) Gold Panda sets w/ Color Lunar Silvers.      They should know how many sets were purchased from China Mint.     These sets are in the West not the East.    Can someone else that has a Gov Mint connection please ask how many sets of each year were ordered and sold?     That maybe will give us a semi accurate actual mintage......

It makes sense that due to low prices/low grade there are many Color Lunars that are not graded, price hike will bring them to grading...

2010 PF 67 Gilt Tiger   $1,499     Ebay 264155657491  Very good German seller.    Same seller also has a 08 PF 69 Color Rat for about $500 and a PF 70 (listed as 69) for about $1,000.      Big price but the Germans have a much better opinion of these Color Silvers being rare then the US dealers/collectors have.      Will Gov Mint, the sole supplier, give us more accurate actual mint/sales numbers for this series?     What do the German collectors know that we do not? .......  (I found a Gilt Tiger OMP last yr on ebay for about $50 or less due to no bidders.).

In photos this series looks good, in hand the colors pop so i can see them becoming popular....

In hand the 2010 gilt tiger is a real beauty and one of my favorite Chinese.      My friends saw the PF 67 listed and considered saving up to buy it but i said too expensive.       Does anyone have any mint numbers on the gilts (2008-?).     Looks like the market for these Color Silver Lunars has a collection group so many more should be graded and hopefully price drop for gilt...

Sales on ebay..
2006 Color Dog  OMP   $79.99    SOLD

German seller lambopsc had some Ended or not available.    Usually his ended listing relist soon but it has been about a week.    Most German sellers i cannot "see other items" on ebay and don't know why....
2003 PF 69 Color Goat                      Ended
2006 PF 69 Color Dog  $173.97  USD Ended
2008 PF 68 Gilt Rat      $202.42         Ended       Ebay 174040459756
2010 PF 69 Gilt Tiger    $403.74         Ended

Are these just not listed or did they sell?    Anyone in Germany know?     IF they did sell, why the sudden demand for silver color lunars?

German seller numismatic-investments sold this one...

2010 PF 67 UC Gilt Tiger     $599     SOLD       Ebay 264155657491    actual selling price?

Demand is up for the rare ones, mostly gilt.      Why the interest?     Gov Mint was the distributor of these Prestige Gold Panda sets w/ silver color lunar medal.      The COA gives mintage.     Could actual sales be much lower?     Did Gov Mint leak out the actual?    Only speculation on my part.      Maybe they have been discovered by collectors.       As posted in past about 4 to 5 yrs ago, some of the top collectors were buying these color lunars so my group and I did too.      They were cheap then but not now....   $599 for a PF 67

Photo is ebay OMP and not this graded tiger....    Maybe those on my previous post by another German seller sold too...

The 2010 PF 67 Gilt Tiger has been relisted at same price. Hopefully one of my collector buddies can dig up the cash to buy it...

Have been asked by collectors looking for a 2008 PF 69 Gilt Rat.     Here are 3 NGC pop
PF 69 - 1  top pop
PF 68 - 4
PF 67 - 1

There are many 2008 Color Rat including photos on this topic of about 100 of them OMP in 3 trays...
Where are the Gilt Rats?     Why so low pop?    Cheap prices so why grade?     It seems all the gilt are very rare.     Again, some experts were buying these up years before i grabbed a clue and they were buying mostly gilt.      My favorite is the 2009 Gilt Ox or Lucky Ox.    Great details.

Photo of the 5 PF 69 my collector buddy bought and lone PF 69 Gilt Rat..
Photo of Gilt Lucky Ox...
I like all of them.     Yes, another lowly medal but these could see more demand as color Chinese becomes more popular.      Have mostly coins but the market changes as time marches on so medals will eventually have their day in the financial sun...
