Title: 1 troy oz China Panda Platinum
Post by: trozau on March 16, 2013, 07:21:00 PM
Terribly tough to photograph with the iPhone camera. Here's the best I came up with after a few tries:
1 troy ounce China Panda platinum (from top to bottom, left to right)
a) 1987 New York coin show panda in platinum
b) 1988 Basel coin show panda with platinum die struck in gold error (no actual platinum medals were struck)
c) 1987 proof panda platinum
d) 1988 proof panda platinum
e) 1989 proof panda platinum
f) 1990 proof panda platinum

Because its Gold.

It's not a Platinum coin, its an error coin.  Some of these gold Basel medals were minted "Pt" for Platinum by mistake. Then the others were correctly minted Au

Correctamundo! Also, of the projected 1000 mintage, 600 gold medals were error (gold struck in die with Pt marking) and 400 gold medals were correctly struck in die with Au marking. So the non-error is rarer than the error. NO platinum medals were struck for this Basel commemorative.

Interesting.  So does that make the non-error more valuable than the error?

Came across a 1990 platinum not long ago, but pity it has a rub on the forehead.
