Coming Soon: 2017 Valentine Pandas
« on: August 17, 2017, 04:48:31 PM »
The 2017 Valentine Pandas should arrive and be released late in August, or early September. I think that the new design for the Pandas is every bit as adorable as the 2017s. A photo will be posted as soon as possible.

The Valentines were again struck at the Shenyang Mint, an official government mint that has a reputation for delivering unsurpassed quality. The artist is also the same as for the 2017 Valentine Panda, Chang Huan. Ms. Chang is profiled along with other outstanding Chinese coin artists in this quarter's China Gold Coin Culture magazine, the official collector publication of China Gold Coin Inc. Ms. Chang is also the artist for the 2017 Hong Kong Coin Show Panda which will be on sale to the public later today in Hong Kong. Its design is already receiving rave comments from those who have seen it (see note below).

Because the 2017 Valentine Pandas are being released so late in the year the mintage was set at 300 (compared to 980 last year). The first opportunity to acquire them will go China Pricepedia subscribers.

Best wishes,
Peter Anthony

Notes: 1. If it isn't obvious, I have a financial interest in the Valentine Panda series.
2: I was very involved in the design and production of the 2017 Hong Kong Coin Show Pandas. However, I have no financial interest in this other than owning one medal. I will try to purchase more at the show like any other member of the public. A couple of friends in China like the design so much that they asked me to buy for them and I hope to get a couple more for myself, too.
3. I was recently, and perhaps jokingly, accused of being an agent of the Shenyang Mint by a participant in this forum. If anyone else is curious about it, I do not receive any type of renumeration from the Shenyang Mint. I am simply a huge fan of their work. However, if anyone wants to associate me with the Mint I would be delighted to be connected to it in any respect.

+1 for

1) using an official mint
2) having just one variety
3) low mintage
4) disclosing your financial interest

Lets hope other medal promoters follow your lead.

I will start a separate topic for the 2017 Hong Kong Coin Show medals. They deserve it.

Great to see that the medal is here  :001_wub:
Was planning to buy 2 as last time
BUT the shipping cost to Sweden is 66$, and that is a bit to high for me

You could have the medals delivered to someone who is visiting the USA from Europe. Find out from Numistacker when next he is visiting. His videos show that he visits the USA several times in the year. Mr. P.A. Is always on the move but I don't know if he goes through Europe. I am quite sure there is a cheaper option somewhere. Best wishes.

The shipping cost to get tracking is ridiculous, I agree. But outside of the Postal Service and Fedex what is there? My apologies.

It is not your fault Peter
Just wondering why it should cost more to send from US, China can send registered for only a few dollar i am told
I cant understand why the big differences
It is also stupid expensive to send registered from Sweden, even within EU
I will still buy them, but trying thru a friend in US

That is the best solution. I have often wondered why shipping costs so much.

On another forum I was asked to describe how this Valentine Panda was created. So...in her office, Ms. Chang Huan showed me drawings of two possible designs and I liked this one better. There was some discussion about adding gold plating to the moon. It looked really cool, but it was finally decided that would resemble the sun too much. There is much interpretation left to the creativity of the engraver, a truly under-appreciated job.

Normally there would be another approval stage of a plaster. However, the Shenyang Mint was swamped with official projects (I was very fortunate they could get this one and the Hong Kong Coin Show Panda done) and I have complete confidence in their excellence. So the Valentine Panda was approved from only a drawing and I didn't see the final result until I opened the shipping box. Needless to say, I am very, very happy with the result.

Congratulations!

So, this means 250 medals were sold?

Please, could you give an idea of where they were sold (nothing proprietary)? Example, did they sell in the USA, Europe, China, Malaysia etc.

Best wishes and Good Luck!

I wish I could announce them, but the sales numbers are confidential. Most of the Valentine Pandas sold were to the USA, which is not surprising given the shipping cost overseas. Between 5-10% went to Europe. A handful are reserved for sale in China. The balance I have will get graded by NGC. Irma has thrown a curve into the timing for that. I planned to submit the Valentines at the Long Beach Show, but the dealers I spoke to are all having second thoughts until we see how the storm plays out. The NGC building is inland which is a positive. I am hoping for the best for the company and all of the people in Irma's path.
