1920 YSK China $1 - Fake?????
« on: December 30, 2012, 09:31:22 PM »
I bought this Year 9 YSK $1 from a seller in spain - looks to be a transfer die counterfeit(?). It is 26.7g (correct weight - diameter) struck in silver.

What do you think??

Everybody says that - I am using a 14.1 megapixel Sony Cyber-shot (A $100 camera a few years ago). The lens fits in my stereo microscope for the super close-up pictures

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, it is a transfer die reproduction. Thanks for such detailed pictures. This make identification very easy. Obviously, you know exact the place to check. This suggests that you are a very knowledgeable coin collector. I am looking forward to learning from you in the future.

Again, chinesecoinchaser gets a -1 karma.  This is really outrageous and puzzling  N26  Why?  This stinks like N36 !!!

..... OK, luckily, someone with GOOD conscience restored his karma back in good standing. Whoever is leaving "smites" (for no good reasons) needs to look at himself in the mirror.

Not sure what the karma thing means, but I did notice i had a -1 for an hour or so...

I thought the coin was a transfer die because of the raised dots, and the tooling on the reverse. Also, the denticles on the coin are a litle wacky. As well as metal "filings" struck into the coin...which appear to be incuse unusual bag marks.

I bought 5 coins from the same seller, all with the same type of diagnostics. A 1919, 1920, 1914 triangle yuan, and 1914 original. All struck in silver - and all weigh out correctly besides the 1914 triangle yuan - which weighs 28.1g. I will take more pictures of those coins and post them.

The guy I bought them from is located in spain - and sells on ebay all the time.

Yes, this karma thing is silly.  Best ignored IMO.
But since you brought it up and your photos are an extraordinary contribution, I will join my buds and send a +1 to you as well.

I also welcome you, and look forward to more postings from you as well.

Stereo microscope? Not everyone has one of these lying around.
On the karma, is it possible we have trolls attempting to run the good posters off?  N26

I have two.   :blushing:  Admittingly I didn't buy them originally for coins, but they turned out particularly useful to learn about varieties and fakes.  The one in the picture with ring light and camera port is my favorite.  In fact, because of the excellent pictures chinesecoinchaser has posted, I'm inspired to buy a scope camera like this one.

Ha! I have a plastic one that I bought my 7 yr old daughter for Xmas over 20 years ago.  :blushing:
It's useless.
How does the camera connect to the port in your picture?
I am surprised we haven't seen more on this type of set-up, maybe a cheap beginners guide?
Would something like this be a good starter piece?

Edit to add: Why would you buy a new camera when you could use an adapter to use a known good camera?
Or have one made?

Dont use that kind of camera, use a normal digital camera with a telescopic lens that matches the diameter of the stereo microscope eye piece.

Those camras have poof optics, and low resolution.

I originally bought my stereo scope for work with insects in amber.
