Thank you for the notice, snowball!
Are the Chinese character's on the obverse too thin in the fake coin a good way to tell?
Do you know of any fake fan or flower shaped coins?  :confused1:

Xin

I haven't yet had the authentic tigers in hand to compare.  However, their package tells me they are 100% fakes.  Starting year 2006, Chinese commemorative coins have never issued with sealed plastic pouch, except bullion gold pandas.   :001_smile:

I have only seen fake fan gold/silver Ox coins on eBay before.

Here is the listing at ebay for this fake colored gold and silver set.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-2010-China-Tiger-Year-Colored-Gold-Silver-2-Coin_W0QQitemZ320448531749QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4a9c388d25

The seller did respond to my email, indicating the silver coin is also 50% silver alloy. The seller did mention that gold coin is gold plated 50% silver alloy coin in the listing.

The chinese characters are on the fake ones.  They just got blocked by the watermark.   ;)

They are just like other typical fake ones with a little over 1% silver.  The principal materials should be copper, nickel, and zinc.  It is a big joke they make fake coins with 50% silver.

It seems like the COA is one of the few ways to differentiate the real from the fake ... http://chinesepandacoin.blogspot.com/2009/11/fake-2010-chinese-lunar-tiger.html

The seller of the fake 2010 Chinese tiger Au/Ag 2-coin set also lists a fake 2008 50th Anniversary of the Founding of Guangxi Zhuang Au/Ag 2-coin set. The seller mentioned in description that coins were silver and gold plated coins.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320467021797&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

The pictures of this fake set as well as genuine set are attached for future reference. First two pictures are fake coins.

The fake set is well-copied. The wooden box and outer paper box are identical to the genuine set. Even the COA appears to be genuine (with watermark). If you do not have a genuine in hand, you will not expect those coins are fake.
