2007 silver panda
« on: May 23, 2016, 10:34:31 PM »
So I think I already know but thought I'd check. Is this a fake panda?

Cons:
Price too good to be true
Decimal seems too far away from 999
10 yuan seems angled wrong and in the wrong spot
Straight reeding

Pros:
31g
39.96 X 3.1 mm (within the margin of my caliper)
Rings like bell, high pitch and resonates

Am I being paranoid and get a good deal or am I just like so many others before me?

The fur on the arms and legs looks wrong. This should ring an alarm bell. I have not compared it to a genuine panda to be sure, but it don't look right to me ;)

Stay away . . .

It is fake for sure.  On the real ones the leaf coming out of the baby panda back points between the 0 and yuan symbol.

I buy coins sight unseen all the time, the key is not to worry about the coin being real or fake, but the trustworthiness and experience of who you are buying from. If I trust the seller I don't worry about buying fakes, because they will refund the money and let me keep the coin.

That's what I was thinking too. You guys confirmed what I already knew but was trying to convince myself otherwise.

The ones that have been fooling me lately have been the 2003 silver pandas. Lots of good fakes out there. Any hints on how not to get stung.

Reputable dealers that allow returns is a good start.  This 2007 I have rings an awful lot like silver and has many other silver attributes so that was allowing my brain to trick me into thinking "oh maybe it's a different mint". I guess the premiums on pandas make it worth casting in silver.

Welcome to the forum.

Actually, this is a low quality fake. Study the pictures of genuine silver pandas (1983-2015) in the following thread. The differences in 3-dimensional details between genuine and fake are quite obvious. Majority of fakes in the market are made with either silver or silver alloys with a correct weight and dimensions.

Figures. I don't know much about coins or silver at the moment but am trying to learn as much as I can.

Welcome, rco83.  Visit here often, as there are handful of experts on this forum - that's how I started. Be very cautious if you purchase these on eBay because counterfeits are aplenty, especially from China. What seems to be a "deal" may not be a bargain after all if you purchased a fake.
