From the December 2013 ChinaPricepedia Champion December 18 Online Auction Features $Million Coins
+ High Grade Modern China and Pandas
The world of online auctions enters rarified territory on December 18. Champion Auctions of Hong Kong will offer two coins that may bring more than $1,000,000 apiece: the 1992 1 kilo gold Inventions and Discoveries of China Seismograph and Compass. The official mintage for these coins is 10 however Martin Weiss, the former owner of PandaAmerica, the person who originally proposed the series to the China Mint, and its exclusive distributor in 1992 has stated that only six pairs were delivered. As no other coins outside of these six have ever been reported and NGC reports physical signs on one coin that it was the last produced it is likely that six is the actual mintage. Both coins are graded Proof-69 by NGC, the highest grades ever received for these.
The sale also includes choice paper banknotes and a wide selection of MS-70 and MS-69 gold coins including Pandas
. The MS-70 coins are from dates rarely seen in this condition.
The lots may be bid on through two websites that offer different buyer premium charges. A 10% buyers premium is charged to bidders at mail, phone or iCollector. A 13% buyers premium is charged to Live Auctioneers:
