I can visualize the talking point of the advertiser:  A precious metal lunar coin is the obvious gift for that new arrival of a grandchild.  It combines the idea of financial secure precious metal and the popular lunar motif gift idea.

IMO, the actual mintages of lunar coins are the planned mintages posted by China Mint. The lunar series are very popular inside China, especially, the colored lunar. China Mint had to increase the mintage of colored lunar in the last few years to satisfy the market demand and less than 10% of the coins were distributed outside China. Because of their popularity and profit margin, they become the prime target of counterfeiters. Usually, the fake colored lunar will show up in the market place within two weeks of issuance of the coin by China Mint. The fake set usually has a very similar box and COA as genuine Mint issued. Just remember every popular coin/medal issued by China Mint has fake produced by counterfeiter.

Here are the links to taobao.com inside China for colored lunar from 2006 to 2014. Except the few genuine sets show in the first page, all other listings in the next several pages are fake, based on the pictures and price.

I have a hard time getting past that theory of full mintage and Chinese collectors buying these colorized coins up if  the full mintage is actually out there and they are hoarding. I will use 4 examples  2009 ox virtually none for sale a minuscule handful of genuine coins $1500 ?? maybe steep but put one up on ebay for $1000 it will sell in 5 minutes 2010 tiger the same thing @ $600 5 minutes, so now if you go to the rabbit more than a double ,THE LOWLY snake double ,here is the best example with virtually none for sale 220,000 supposed mintage 2014 horse ,I am trying to buy 10 @ around 250usd spot free .I CANT FIND THEM ...that is 2.5 times the issue price for a coin that was minted a year ago in a spiraling down MCC market with a mintage of 220,000  ........ is it possible ??  that all these coins are out there and no one is taking a profit?? that is far fetched to me........ apmex none ,modern coin mart none, panda america none??  Shanghai dealers either looking for crazy money and even if you want to pay 350 for a coin they don't have 10 ,the coins are white spotted ,or they simply don't have them, I have been looking and asking.

There are more than 16 MM new born every year inside China. It only needs 2% of parent/grandparent to buy lunar coin as gift for their new baby to exhaust yearly lunar coins produced by China Mint. Those lunar coins bought by parent/grandparent will not be in circulation for a long time. Earlier 2008 was the time of starting bull market for MCC and 2009 ox silver 1 oz. which was issued in Nov. 2008 would be the nature first selection as gift to buy by parent/grandparent. They were under $100 and affordable for average mid-income family at this price between later 2008 and earlier 2009. The price of colored lunar coins are always comparable or higher than flower lunar, even the mintage of colored lunar (100,000) is more than flower lunar (60,000).

It also be noted that MCC market is closely related to China stock market. Chinese stock market went up about 100% between mid-2008 to mid-2011, so was the MCC market. Last week, Chinese stock market reached 14 months high and MCC market also made very nice upward movement during last two months. The shortage of colored horse in the market place may not be temporary, even the mintage is 220,000, unless the Chinese stock market has a significant correction in the next few months or gold silver price drops another 10%, due to the strong dollar.
