Selling PCGS 1991 1 oz. gold Panda – Pop 17 or less
« on: December 22, 2010, 06:28:02 AM »

1991 is the first of a decade-long run of scarce and rare gold Pandas. The total BU population of 1991 100 Yuan gold Pandas is considerably under 10,000. That population is split into two varieties: Large Date and Small Date.

Essentially all the dates of gold coins struck by the Chinese Mint during the 1990's have serious problems with red, or "copper" spots. These blemishes are caused by small residual amounts of silver and sulfur on the coin's surface that react with the air. Coins that are free of these marks like this one are scarce and prized.

Only 23 1991 100 Yuan gold Pandas coins have been given the MS-69 grade by PCGS, considered by many to be the toughest grading service. Of the 23 just 4 are Large Dates while 13 are unclassified — so there can be no more than 17 MS-69 Large Dates. The odds are that the actual MS-69 Large Date population is under 10. No PCGS MS-70s exist for this date and denomination.

The coin being offered is the PCGS Large Date variety. Its population is nearly certain to be less than the 3,500 Proofs that were struck in 1991. There are, in fact, fewer PCGS MS-69 than there are Proof-69s for this date. The asking price for a 1991 PF-69 Proof is $3,400 and $3,000 for a PF-68. How much is this scarcer MS-69 variety worth? It is in outstanding condition and I believe has excellent investment potential. Only one available.
