Where are the 2015 Lunars ?
« on: March 02, 2015, 03:12:12 AM »
Has anyone noticed that there are no Scallop or Fan ms/pf70 2015 Lunars up on Ebay.
You would think that there would be many by now ??
What happened?

There are some in china BUT not many on ebay. It is hard to get PF70 due to bad die of the coin as I heard from China dealer.

It seems the 2015's are proving problematic in 70's.

your right Geoxxx  the scallop and fan are very tough to grade pf 70 ,I also think that not too many of the whole series where minted ,hardly any for sale? the mint in china had a high issue price on the series and dealers did not buy too many ,if you notice the coins in raw form came out with a pretty steep price on them ie : wholesale   color $185   scallop 170   and fan 135  .....  everyone played the waiting game thinking prices would come down they have not ,so essentially 1 of 2 things are happening either the domestic chinese market sucked up all the coins ,or not too many dealers bought in to the high price and consequently no pre orders from dealers? the mint did not make many? by now with Chinese New year over you would see the price drop if coins where for sale , the goat is going to act just like the 2014 horse , go higher from here IMHO

I bought one scallop at issue price from china dealer at USD178 including shipping.

I bought another one for grading in mid Feb which the price has drop to USD145. Cross the finger which I get PF69 and not lower. The fan goat only at USD118

In the interest of clarity I will share my grading results on the 2015 goat for the lunar fans ,it is very important to know these coins where hand selected out of many coins using a 5x lighted magnifier  for example more than 100 scallop coins where looked at to come up with 5 to grade ,the fans when looking at many it appears that 50% of them are lucky to grade 68 ,the prices i stated above where at time of issue

The other problem is whether they'll hold the grade. One of my 2014 scallop horse developed severe toning sometime between sending for grading and arriving back in the mail. Now it looks more like a 68. It makes it hard to overpay for a 70. If I get lucky with a submission and get a 70, thats not so bad.

I've had the same problem a couple of times.  I have been trying to convince NGC to start shipping coins in corrosion resistant packaging for this very reason...however they will not listen and refuse to change their processes.  I encourage anyone who has an interest to contact NGC and complain.

When did the toning problem begin? Is it only for lunar coins? Does a product like Coin Armour prevent the toning? Thanks.
