Hello Collectors!

Today I need the help of the community concerning a tricky question:

I have a 100 Yuan 12 Oz Silver Lunar Coins Collection from 1988 to 1999. All coins are graded by NGC and with box & COA as you can see below. Now I am thinking to split the collection in two parts. Both parts are for people that are very important in my life. The problem is it is very difficult to find a fair division. Can you tell me your opinion? You are invited to make your own suggestions.

100 Yuan Dragon 1988 NGC PF 67
100 Yuan Snake 1989 NGC PF 66
100 Yuan Horse 1990 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Goat 1991 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Monkey 1992 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Rooster 1993 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Dog 1994 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Pig 1995 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Rat 1996 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Ox 1997 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Tiger 1998 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Rabbit 1999 NGC PF 66

Many thanks in advance for your help! Best regards!

Has each party indicated their preference?

options:
* 1st half + 2nd half
* even year + odd year
* random (pick a # out of a hat)
* keep it for future generation
* take it with you
* I will take them so you don't have the problem to think about it

I don't know the current market price for these.  Find and put current market price for these and divide them equally based on price.

In each half I will make sure that each of them get their lunar birth year coin (hopefully its not same...If it is ...u decide by toss).

Good luck!

Many thanks for the first answers.

My main goal is that both people get nearly the same value. Any suggestions?

a) Have the 2 recipients look/check out the coins so that they can prioritize their coin choice rankings.
b) Flip a coin to determine who between the 2 recipients gets first choice of 1 of the 12 coins.
c) Have them choose 1 alternately until all coins are chosen.

That way they both get to pick the coins in their order of personal preference.

Herbert

I would sell the twelve lunar coins and invest the money in two rare coins or medals (high grade and low actual mintage).  Then, I would give one medal to each person.  Any attempt to split this set into two "equal" portions is certain to fail.

Hi, I personally would not put Tiger Dragon and Ox in one basket/ hands. Those are more popular for general population than others.
otherwise, it does not matter much, as I would be etremely grateful even for a single coin from the list :-))

Since these are each unique by itself, your attempt to split them will failed as mentioned by Mark.  Unless each recipient pick each themselves, there never will be an equal and satisfying split.

The old saying, small thing in the beginning will be big annoyance in the future.

My offer to alleviate your dilemma still stand

Hi,

this is my second suggestion:

100 Yuan Dragon 1988 NGC PF 67
100 Yuan Snake 1989 NGC PF 66
100 Yuan Horse 1990 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Goat 1991 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Rooster 1993 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Pig 1995 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Rat 1996 NGC PF 69

100 Yuan Monkey 1992 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Dog 1994 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Ox 1997 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Tiger 1998 NGC PF 69
100 Yuan Rabbit 1999 NGC PF 66

that looks better, I would probably try to make it 6 to 6, though. like Rooster 1993 to the second pool. Definitely, Dragon and Hoarse and Ox and Tiger separated look fine, and then divide coins to make it  equal in price and grade.

Why not just put all 12 coins on a table, invite the two people to be in the same room as the coins, and them let these two people alternate choosing coins until all 12 are accounted for . . . an even split for which you cannot be held responsible?

As long as you try to decide for them, you are leaving yourself open to the possibility of backlash or frustration from them.
