The Sun Company (1936) tokens
« on: October 02, 2013, 11:46:57 AM »
Let me introduce you another company out of four big companies.

The Sun Company (大新) is also called Doh Sun or DaXin was founded by two brothers: Cai Xing (Choy Hing-photo) and Cai Chang (Choy Chung: 1877-1953) on 10th January 1936 on the corner of People's Square (on Nanking Road at the junction of Xizang Road) on Nanjing Road 830 (Nowadays it is 800 East Nanjing Road). Towering at 10 stories, the shop was the largest of the four big companies with lifts and central heating, although it was built with yellow brick rather than stone. Doh Sun also opened their branches earlier in Hongkong in 1912 and Guangzhou in 1916.

Cai Chang (Choy Chung) became general supervisor of the three Sun Companies and Cai Hui Min was the general manager of the Shanghai Sun Company. 60% of the commodities sold of foreign origin. It had 18 windows for display.

The big attraction of Sun Company was the escalators from the ground floor to the second floor and from the second floor to the third floor with thousands of people coming just to watch or try the escalators. In the newspaper advertisement, announcing the opening of Sun Co. there was a paragraph saying:

"In order to avoid congestion, tickets are sold at 40 cents each for mounting the escalators. The tickets can be used when buying things for the value of 40 cents."

As in other department stores, the first four floors were used for selling products. Offices, restaurants, and amusement centers occupied the upper floors. Regular exhibitions were held for paintings and calligraphy, which was a specialty of the Sun Company.

Although all the four companies were Chinese owned, three of them were registered in the UK and the US to enjoy the privileges entitled to foreign companies. Only Sun Sun was registered with the Chinese government.

The four department stores broke a lot of new ground. They were the first shops in Shanghai to hire female shop assistants. This was, at that stage in China, considered very unconventional - most shop assistants were male and most women were housewives.

During the Sino-Japanese war, Sun Company was occupied by the Japanese. The company closed before the nationalization of property began in the 1950s. On 20th October 1949, the first owned department store opened its doors at the corner of Nanjing and Zhejiang Road, named "Shanghai Daily Use Articles Co." In 1958, the name was changed into Shanghai Number 1 Department Store. This state owned department stores was moved to the original site of Sun Co. eventually becoming the leading department store in Shanghai. Today it averages 150,000 shoppers a day over 11 levels of merchandise.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, all four department stores were nationalized and their names and ownership have changed many times since. Today, beside the Shanghai First Food Store (the former Sun Sun Department Store), the former building of the Sincere Department Store is now the Shanghai Fashion Store, selling clothes. Dah Sun has become the Shanghai No.1 Department Store. Only Wing On still uses its former Chinese name, although it is now run by the State-owned Bailian Group and no longer uses Wing On, a Cantonese translation, as its English title, but Yong'an, the pinyin version.
