Champion Hong Kong Auction 17 - April 3rd 2012
« on: March 05, 2012, 11:29:00 AM »
I looked at this auction and there is pretty much nothing as far as Chinese modern coins. Out of 41 pages, CMC start at page 37 for a total of 5 pages.

A set of 1992 200 Yuan kilo silver Invention and Discoveries is a high level late addition to the April Champion auction. The mintage on these is supposedly 50 sets, but actual mintage may be just 38. Many coins were sold as singles so a set is even rarer than that. This full set should cause some fireworks. Plenty of other coins excellent coins, also, like 20 oz. silver Peacocks and Unicorns.

I will be in Hong Kong for the multitude of auctions and the coin show.  If you wish to meet for a drink, dinner and conversation, please let me know.  I will arrive in Hong Kong in the early evening of April 1st.

Raul,

Could you describe lot 760 for us? I saw Michael Chou, the president of Champion, at the Singapore Coin Fair yesterday, and he told me how he personally flew to Europe just to pick up this one set from its original owner. With less tha ten compete sets in the world, and even fewer with matching serial numbers like this one has, it could set a record price for modern Chinese silver coins. Thanks.

Best wishes,
Peter Anthony

small HK market was abuzz with these new currency issues!!!!!  people clamoring for them!  Vendors tho negative on MCC market.

Other higher-ups in the industry getting positive vibes but there slightly bias.

later today at the viewing will tell how the market is fairing, by how many show up.

Seems like there is an error with Lot 760.  It is labeled as a 91 10th anniversary panda set and has a very low estimated price of only $400-$800.  I don't think that a record!  However, the picture shows what I believe is the set you are talking about?  The 200Y I&D set.  Is that the set?

From what I can tell, the photo is correct.  Live Auctioneers has the right description.

I don't think I've ever seen that set auctioned off. Wasn't there a single graded silver kilo I&D coin on eBay a while back from a seller in Canada? I forgot what he was asking. Either way, Champion always impresses with featured lots like that.

How's Singapore, Peter?

Adam,

The show has been outstanding with excellent attendance, beautiful location, helpful staffing, and people come to buy! I expect that in the future this show will be a must for everyone going to Hong Kong. You can come here, and then go straight to Hong Kong for practically nothing extra in airfare. I was quoted $100 more to go both places. Also, Singapore will eliminate its tariff on imported coins later this year, which will make it cheaper and less of a bother for dealers to attend. This is already an excellent  place to buy and sell coins. With the tariff gone, It should be a terrific one.

There are probably less than ten complete sets of these. Most of the coins were sold as singles, not sets. Some of the sets were put together later and don't have matching numbers. This set is totally original with matching serial numbers. I was told that its condition is top flight, too.
