ChengXuan Spring auction at Beijing, 5/13-5/15.  Here is the link to the results (in chinese).

Majority (more than 700)sold were imperial and republic coins. There were about 100 modern Chinese coins sold.

Highlights for modern Chinese coins

Lot# 3367: 1993 bronze ware artifacts proof gold 4-coin set, RMB250,000 ($38,500) fee included.

Lot# 3359: 1993 inventions and discoveries proof gold set, RMB200,000 ($30,700)

Lot# 3360: 1994 inventions and discoveries proof gold set, RMB200,000 ($30,700)

Lot# 3361: 1995 inventions and discoveries proof gold set, RMB500,000 ($77,000)

Lot# 3361: 1996 inventions and discoveries proof gold set, RMB220,000 ($33,800)

Lot# 3376: 1996 1 oz gold unicorn, RMB75,000 ($11,500)

Lot#3339: 1985 1 Yuan brass proof panda, NGCPF64, RMB200,000 ($30,800). Planned mintage is 1,000, but is believed that the actual mintage is less than 100.

No wonder I was never able to find one of these.  I've been looking since 2005.  I guess that one moves to my "I'll never be able to afford" list.

I seem to remember one selling for $3000 in a private transaction a few months ago. At the time, I don't think the buyer or the seller knew how rare it was.

I seem to remember one selling for $3000 in a private transaction a few months ago. At the time, I don't think the buyer or the seller knew how rare it was.

I would have been all over that had I known.

Hah, yeah. I saw a 1998 1 oz platinum tiger sell for a little over bullion value too :)
